Could you work as an Imagineer for Disney? Well, I bet you could! In this class, students will be introduced to the range of possible attractions and designs within a theme park, with a focus on dark ride attractions. Students will learn the importance of creating theme and using storytelling to create an immersive and engaging attraction. We will learn about the creative development process for attraction design, where students IMAGINE and DESIGN a dark ride of their own. Attraction design will encompass both arts and engineering aspects! Disney's "Imagineering in a Box", via Khan Academy, with video's linked through YouTube, will be utilized! Your student will walk out of this class with a physical model of your attraction. ONLINE INTERACTION: * We will be using the Outschool classroom to view instructional videos, retrieve and post assignments, and ask and answer questions. Students will also answer questions about ride design each week to sharpen their critical thinking skills. These will also be posted in the Outschool classroom. Teacher will give weekly feedback to guide student progress. Students will also share out their story board, attraction lay out, and scale model when they are due (see below for the weeks each item is due). Instruction and activity will occur through the Outschool Classroom. Families are responsible for supplying their own materials and creating their own project. Examples of designs will be available for student reference. Designs may be created via physical models or digital models. Again, visual examples of previous designs will be available upon sign up. Course Schedule: Disney's "Imagineering in a Box", via Khan Academy, with video's linked through YouTube, will be utilized! Week 1: Introduce Ride Design and the Scale Model Project; Create a Story Board (first assignment, due Week 2) Week 2: Story Boards are due; Learn about Ride Systems & Attraction Lay Out (Attraction Lay Out is second assignment, due Week 3) Week 3: Attraction Lay Out Due; Learn about Ride Capacity Week 4: Work on Scale Models Week 5: Finish and Submit Scale Models

Story Board: Paper, Writing Utensil, Colors, Google Docs, Digital Art tools, etc... (you can create your story board digitally or in print) Attraction Lay Out: Paper, Writing Utensil, Colors, Google Docs, Digital Art tools, etc... (you can create your story board digitally or in print) Scale Model: You can create your Scale Model digitally or build your own Scale Model. To build your own Scale Model: (Suggestions!) Use simple materials you can find at home (cardboard, styrofoam, paper) Start broad and layout everything first in 2D, then build things up in 3D Add the little details after you have a rough 3D shape for your model One way to identify scene locations is with small pieces of paper with drawings on them. Once you finish your model you can try doing a ride preview using a small camera (such as a phone)
