In these sessions, after baking a warm batch of cookies, we will follow the story of Calvin from "Trouble Next Door" by Karen English. Week 1Lesson 1Author's Point of View/Peanut Butter CookiesA discussion on how the story was written will help students understand the different types of author's point of view. A story outline will be give for students to begin their presentation.Week 2Lesson 2Author's purpose and type of engagement/SnickerdoodlesThis session will discussion on engagement and the author's purpose. We answer the question where and when to describe setting, time and locations in the story.Week 3Lesson 3Themes and Topic/Oatmeal CookiesThis session will discuss the main idea and supporting detail. The question why will reveal how themes and topics are used in stories.Week 4Lesson 4Characters/Banana CookiesThe question who will investigate the types of characters. We will identify and discuss how character's types and character's action affect stories.Week 5Lesson 5Book Outline/Chocolate CookiesIn this session we will use the question family as a outline to make a Powerpoint, Jamboard or hand-written presentation to share with the class.Week 6Lesson 6Student Presentations/Sugar CookiesStudents will share and peer review completed presentations.

Students will gain a deeper understanding of the elements of a story (characters, settings, conflict, solution, plot and moral) and discussing books while learning how to bake cookies.
My goal is to encourage lifelong skills. While I do not claim to be a baker, I do know cookies and reading go well together.

Discussion 20 Participation 30 Book Report Presentation 50 Students will receive a certification of completion with a grade of 80 or higher.
Common cookie ingredients: Sugar Butter Eggs Flour Baking Soda Vanilla Brown Sugar Cake Mix Measuring Spoons Large Bowl Exact cookie ingredients will be posted prior to class time.
Please be aware cookie ingredients may not meet everyone's dietary restrictions. Some ingredients may contain allergens such as nuts, wheat, dairy, eggs or soy. You are welcome to adjust and share recipes with substitutions or alternative ingredients during class time. Also, students will be exposed to potential hazards including but not limited to stoves, ovens, knives, mixer blades or blenders while cooking. Therefore, student will not be allowed to participate in the baking portion of the class without an adult present. Student without an adult can watch the baking segment and participate in the book club reading and discussion.
