Children in grades 1 - 3 (ages 6 - 9) will have fun learning communication and conversation skills such as listening, eye contact, body language, and gestures. Learners are encouraged to turn their video cameras "on" so they can stay involved and engaged throughout this highly interactive class.

Dr. Julie Connor, Ed.D. has engaged students of all ages with public speaking and communication instruction and coaching for more than 30 years. She uses games, speaking skill and practice exercises, modeling, role-playing, as well as specific strategies with tips provided on PowerPoint slides developed from public speaking curriculum she created for meaningful classroom instruction and experiences.  All students can participate - no background knowledge and skills are necessary.

It is not necessary for students to attend these classes in order.  Students may also take this class more than one time to practice different types of speeches and public speaking skills: 

Children will introduce themselves to one another and practice conversation skills.
Children will introduce themselves and their pet, toy, sport, or game; describe what they brought to share in class; and explain why they enjoy what they brought to share in class.
Children will practice conversation etiquette such as listening, nonverbal communication, and asking questions.
Children will learn how to use gestures and movement with intention while speaking to others.
Children will learn skills and strategies to speak without preparation through interactive games.

This ongoing course provides young speakers with opportunities to gain confidence as they practice new skills and receive encouragement in a safe and positive environment with a nurturing teacher.
