학습 평가
Students will remark upon what they like and remember about other students comics. I've found that people really pay attention to what their peers have to say. They can tell when their peers are being sincere in their admiration. Moreover, the students tend to model after the instructor and the better students in class.

The class is structured to expose students to new aspects of comics to which they haven't been introduced before. At the same time, the course practices will build confidence in a warm and friendly supportive setting.

Each week we'll cover the basic vocabulary of comics, learning at least one term a week and one new skill a week.
We'll draw together and share our drawings if we want to. Students will note improvements, and mention the details that catch their eye in others drawings. Drawing in class will allow students to not only build focus and concentration, but also allow them to learn how to give respectful peer feedback and thoughtful analysis. Usually, learners are requested to complete the drawing after class and post their work in the classroom each week before the next class.

This class is equally suited to those who have been drawing for years and those who currently draw stick figures but have strong imaginations. Students will learn how to draw better comics as well as strengthen their abilities to create characters and story.

Lesson One:
Each week we'll learn an easy drawing technique that will make your comics look bolder and better.
Our first technique will be the use of black.
We'll start by learning about outlines, silhouettes, and negative space.
Then we'll have an exercise where learners will attempt to master these basic visual effects in comics.
We'll finish the class looking at each other's efforts and commenting on what's successful.

Lesson Two: This week we'll start with the splash page.
We'll not only learn the components of a splash page, but students will enjoy learning how comic book readers can anticipate the comic episode story by spotting the details of the splash page. Students will conclude the lesson by attempting a splash page that they start in class but finish outside of class and present the the group the following week.

Lesson Three:
When looking at splash pages, we'll also look at emotions from facial expressions to body language, and setting. This week we'll shift our focus to emotions in comics as we explore the various ways emotion underlies almost all aspects of comics.
We'll start by looking at comic book panels and how they can vary in shape.
We'll conclude class by doing an exercise in drawing comic panel shapes that to push the limits of what we can do with panels. We'll also look at the frames around comic panels and explore their possibilities with an exercise students will begin in class and finish outside of class.

Lesson Four:
Showing emotion: this week we'll practice showing emotion in comic character expressions and body language.
In addition to getting an assignment to practice experimenting with character expression and body language, we'll discuss the way that some characters are drawn in a more realistic style and others are drawn in a more iconic way. We'll look at the reasons behind that at the end of class. Students will leave with homework to draw a character's face using an array of expressions.

Lesson Five:
This week, we'll examine how comic book settings also convey emotion. We'll analyze different comic book settings for how they create mood, tone, and atmosphere. Students will then work on their comic book settings.

Lesson Six:
Part One: We'll learn about the key role the gutter plays in our imaginations when we read comic books. This is by way of introducing the core part of this unique class: comic book juxtapositions.
Part Two: We'll start discussing comic book image juxtapositions -- we'll start with image juxtaposition #1
Part Three: We'll learn how to take advantage of "the gutter" to draw less by cutting between scenes and actions.
Part Four: Students will be assigned the task of creating a series of panels that use juxtaposition #1

Lesson Seven:
Part One: This week we'll study image juxtaposition #2
Part Two: We'll do an exercise that helps us master image juxtaposition #1 and #2.

Lesson Eight:
Part One: This week we'll study image juxtaposition #3
Part Two: We'll do an exercise that will help us master image juxtaposition #1, #2, and #3
We'll also review what we've learned about juxtapositions so far, and look at comic panels to see the ways in which people can use them.

Lesson Nine:
Part One: This week we'll look at image juxtaposition #4
Part Two: We'll do an exercise to help us master image juxtaposition #4

Lesson Ten and on:
Now students have the skills to imbue their comics with drama and emotion. We'll turn to discussing the story aspect of comic books and the character arcs that make comics so compelling. We'll begin talking about creating a rough draft for a comic book episode. We'll use all the lessons remaining in the course to craft ideas for the beginning, middle, and end to a comic book episode and begin sketching out the first pages.

This course is followed by a comic book story boarding course that is highly recommended as a follow up for those who want to continue building their comic drawing skills by learning the elements of storyboarding an entire comic book episode.

I actually got to learn how to teach comics from an iconic figure in the comics world named Scott McCloud just as his seminal book Understanding Comics had been released for the first time. Since then I've taught over 15 comics classes in summer camps. I've also been invited into public schools and been awarded grants to teach comics to kids. I come from a writing background, but comic books are a unique medium comprised of half writing and half visual story telling. Teachers used to walk by the classes that I taught and snicker -- they'd never seen a group of boys so completely focussed and quiet before.
