Color is a great addition to works of art, but it can be difficult to manage if you don't understand it completely. This five-day camp will teach artists all about what colors are scientifically and how to make them our allies in art. Get ready to do lots of fun color experiments, grab some colored pencils, crayons, or watercolor paints, and let's get coloring! Day 1: Discuss all the colors of the spectrum and start a fun color wheel Day 2: Continue color wheel to examine how color and value interact Day 3: Finish color wheel with a look at how colors neutralize Day 4: Observe how warm and cool colors interact and have some fun with odd color phenomena Day 5: Examine how we perceive white and how to paint or color white subject matter with a project Every day we begin with 5-10 minutes of discussion, and then finish with follow-along workshopping, experimentation and project work. Questions, discussion, and collaboration are encouraged! I am here to help. Beginners are welcome! Some experience with watercolors, colored pencil, or crayon is helpful but not required for this class. I find that a teacher is only as good as their flexibility. I use structure to guide students in achieving certain skills, but I leave the experimentation, creativity, and imagination up to them! I try to learn as much from my students as they can learn from me.

Students will understand the science of color: what colors are, values of colors, color hues (names), warm colors vs. cool colors, how to make neutral colors (i.e. grays and browns), simultaneous contrast, and how to make colors work for them in their art. Students will create a practical visual aid that they can use when creating and perfecting their art in the future.

If you choose to color: - Colored pencils or crayons (large variety of colors recommended) OR... If you choose to paint: -Watercolor paints palette: $6+ -At least 8 sheets of thick paper (watercolor paper is best. Michael's or Target sells it in pads): $4+ -Watercolor paint brushes in a variety of sizes (Michael's): $6+ -Pencil -Eraser -An old rag or paper towels -2 reusable, disposable cups of water For Day 5 you'll also need: A photo of a white object against an all-white background

I received my AA in studio art in 2016, and I have been teaching art since 2020, when I led a paint tutorial for a sixth grade birthday party that was almost cancelled due to the pandemic. I really enjoyed the experience and became excited about the idea of sharing art and creativity with other artists.
