At the end of the course, parents are welcome to request a full assessment of the students progress over the 8 weeks if they would like. Further, grades are optional but available. Students will be assessed based on how they have grown as writers in the course and assessments will include what they have done well with end areas that need improving. For those receiving grades, rubric will be distributed to parents so they can see where all of the points are coming from in the final grade.

수업 소개

영어레벨 - B1
미국 9학년 - 12학년 학년
레벨 Intermediate - Advanced
In this course, students will participate in an intensive eight-week course focused on developing a 7-8 page long research paper on a topic of their choice that achieves college-level standards. Students who have not completed semester one of the College Prep Writing Series are strongly encouraged to do so before participating in this course.

This class focuses on the research process for a longer-form research paper over the same amount of time that students generally have to develop their papers for college courses--eight weeks. Each week, students will work with the instructor to develop their papers and research skills, emphasizing items such as source selection, citing sources, developing an argument, paper formatting, and many other topics. Every week, students are expected to complete the week's steps to further the progress of their paper and submit assignments in a timely manner. Classes are capped at seven students to ensure ample time for sharing and questions. In week seven of the course, students will be asked to meet individually with the instructor, as opposed to in a group, to discuss their paper's progress for 10-15 minutes apiece to allow for in-depth conversations about their final drafts and personalized feedback before the submission of their final papers.

The weekly schedule can be found in the syllabus section below!

레슨1:
Introduction to Research Papers and Selecting a Topic
They will learn about what a research paper is and what the process for the next few weeks looks like. Students will discuss possible research topics they would like to pursue and the instructor will discuss how to appropriately select a topic for any given paper. For homework, students are expected to select a topic and write a 1-2 paragraph proposal for their research paper topic. This is common practice in the college classroom.

레슨2:
Identifying Scholarly Level Sources and Annotated Bibliographies
Students will learn how to identify what is a credible, scholarly level source that would be appropriate for a college paper and how to determine what is not acceptable for their papers. Students will be introduced to a number of places where they can find source materials online, including how to find journal articles, and search for eBooks. Students will also be introduced to annotated bibliographies, which are commonly submitted to instructors in university for guidance on source materials.

레슨3:
Introductions and Writing an Effective Argument
Students will begin working on writing their paper itself, focusing on developing an argument and writing an introduction. Students will be taught how to create an argument for an academic paper and steer away from just writing book report-style papers at this level. Students will be taught how to develop an argument that synthesizes their own research and uses their own voice and ideas at the same time.

레슨4:
Body Paragraphs and Citing Your Sources
Week 4 of the course is all about how to incorporate your research into the body of your paper. Students will learn about the importance of synthesizing their source materials with analyses of those materials and their own ideas and voices in the body of their paper. I encourage them to use their own ideas as much as possible and avoid reiterating fact after fact they found in outside materials. Further, students will cover two different methods of citing their sources, MLA and Chicago.

I have been teaching at the university level for nearly four years, and have graded and edited hundreds of papers from college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in those years. I hope to help develop writing skills in high school-aged children in this class to prevent many of the common errors I see in university papers!
