  • Lesson One: The weekly video will discuss how to cite in text in MLA format. This is the "easier" of the two formats and often used in high schools. The practice samples will all focus on the MLA format and citing the sources in the body of the essay. Lesson Two: The weekly video will wrap up MLA by explaining how to properly craft a Works Cited page. We will talk about citing books and physical sources, but we will spend more time talking about citing online resources, as this will probably be where the majority of students' resources come from. The daily practice samples will give students six different potential sources to practice crafting into a Works Cited page. Lesson Three: Back to in text citations, but this time for the more complicated APA format. APA is used more often in colleges and universities. The extra rules make it a little bit more challenging to format, but with the right knowledge it can easier to navigate and understand. The daily practice samples will focus on formatting in the body of the essay in APA style. Lesson Four: We finish off with the Reference page at the end of an APA paper. Similar to the Works Cited page, the Reference page is an important part of any essay and students must format it correctly. The daily practice samples will focus on many online resources, as these are the types of sources students are most likely to encounter.
I have a Master's degree in Creative Writing which required my own 30 page extended critical essay. I have tutored many high school and college students about the importance of correct citations. I currently teach English Composition I and II for a local nursing school. Unfortunately, when students do finally cite information, they often do it incorrectly because they are confused and overwhelmed by all of their options. My goal is to inform and empower students as much as possible using the information I have gathered and learned over my own teaching career.
