수업 소개

영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
미국 5학년 - 8학년 학년
Our class time will follow this timeline:
As class is beginning, learners will write factor pairs for a number with many factorization possibilities, like 72 or 240. As we get ready to transition into the main activity we will go over what the learners came up with and see how their results are similar or different, and begin using the prime factor circles (a type of graphic labeled with and representing a number) to make sure we've found all factor pairs.
After reviewing factor pairs, we will create a factor tree together, with me moving the graphics on the display. I will demonstrate moving a prime factor circle to the top of a tree graphic, then moving more prime factor circles onto the tree and connecting them with lines, to illustrate the tree method of factoring; the learners will suggest factor pairs at each step.
Depending on how quickly learners seem to be picking up on this we may repeat working together a few times, then learners will work on their own to make factor trees.
After they finish or if they're stuck, we will go over their trees together. Depending on time they may complete various numbers of factor trees.
If time permits, we will extend to making "forests" of as many different trees as possible for the same number, starting with the number each learner made a tree for earlier in the session, and investigate patterns in which numbers have bigger or smaller forests.
Topics and activities may be adjusted based on learners' needs and interests.

Learners should already know what factors are, and be familiar with the connection between multiplication and division as well as with common divisibility rules, especially those for 2, 3, and 5. Previous familiarity with writing numbers in prime factored form, either repeated-factor notation or condensed using exponents, will make this activity easier but is not a necessity. Learners also need enough technology skills (or readily available help) to switch back and forth between the Zoom meeting and Polypad workspace and quickly learn to use simple tools in Polypad.

학습 목표

Learners will practice finding prime factorizations of numbers using factor trees.
Learners will compare different factor trees for the same number.
Learners may investigate which numbers can be factored in more different ways, though eventually reaching the same prime factorization.
Learners will practice social skills such as speaking up when they have ideas and hearing out each other's ideas.

Mathigon Polypad is virtual math exploration and demonstration software with many features that are useful for number theory, geometry, fractions, probability, algebra, logic, electronics, sound, money, and other topics and applications of mathematics. Learners will access the activity through a class code which requires signing up for a free account. For added security and privacy, a pseudonym can be used, and a parent account can be set up linked to the student account.
