Join us in a captivating exploration of the Summer and Winter Solstice, the enchanting celestial events that marks the longest and shortest days of the year. In "Let's Celebrate the Solstice," children will embark on a multifaceted journey encompassing science, history, and storytelling.

Course Highlights:

Scientific Exploration:
Understand the fundamentals of the Earth's orbit and axial tilt.
Delve into the science behind solstices, equinoxes, and seasons.
Discover the intriguing relationship between the Earth and the Sun during the Solstice.

Vocabulary Enrichment:
Introduce and explore new terms such as orbit, axial tilt, hemisphere, equator, solstice, vernal, and autumnal equinox.
Foster a deeper understanding of these concepts through interactive discussions and activities.

Historical Celebrations:
Examine the diverse ways in which cultures throughout history have celebrated the Summer and Winter Solstice.
Explore traditions, rituals, and festivities associated with the solstice around the world.

Interactive Learning:
Engage in interactive discussions where students share their existing knowledge and experiences related to the season. 
Utilize a second camera to visually demonstrate the Earth's path around the Sun, making complex concepts accessible to young minds.

Immerse in a fictional story set in the Friendly Forest, unfolding the magical tale of the first day of summer or winter. 
Conclude the class with a hands-on illustration activity, capturing the essence of the season. 

Course Objectives:
Foster curiosity and a love for learning about the natural world.
Develop a foundational understanding of astronomy concepts related to the Solstice.
Encourage creative expression through storytelling and art.
Promote cultural awareness by exploring various historical celebrations of the Solstice.

Materials Needed:
Drawing materials for the illustration activity.
An open mind ready for exploration and discovery.
Enthusiasm for sharing stories and participating in interactive discussions.

Learning Goals

Students will learn why the winter solstice occurs using vocabulary words such as, orbit, axial tilt, hemisphere, equator, solstice, vernal and autumnal equinox.

Paper, crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
The NASA website and the book The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper provide source material for the curriculum. These resources have helped me gain knowledge but will not be used in class. Students will be provided with handouts that have been designed by me and are a part of my personal curriculum from The Montessori ReStore.

She has her Masters Degree in Special Education and therefor has become adept at breaking down complex concepts for young audiences through hands on learning, storytelling and play.
