In this class, Learners will conduct guided experiments with candy, They will learn about the scientific method, chemistry, engineering, biology, and even a bit of kitchen science. These are the questions we will be asking, which we will turn into experiments: Week 1: What melts? Week 2: What happens when we mix an acid and a base? Week 3: What is a crystal? Week 4: Can we harness the power of the sun? Week 5: What is Osmosis? Week 6: Can we build our own vending machine? Week 7:...
We will be discussing the scientific method, as well as chemistry, natural science, and biology. This is an all-encompassing science class!

There may be a small amount of homework outside of class, depending on how far we get in class. If so, it shouldn't take more than an hour or so. On weeks 4 and 5, there will be some work outside of class, but it will be very easy, and is mostly just monitoring the experiment.수업 외 주당 1 - 2 시간

Week 1: Skittles M&Ms Hot Water Cups Week 2: Water Gummy Worms Baking Soda Vinegar knife Measuring Spoons Week 3: Pot Stove Water Sugar Corn Syrup Popsicle stick, wooden skewer, lollipop stick, or string Food coloring (optional) Flavoring extract (optional, see this link for ideas/items that would work) Week 4: Jolly Ranchers Box (shoe box size or larger) Roll of foil Black construction paper Glue gun Scissors Sticks/bamboo skewers Clear packing tape Plastic wrap Week 5: Gummy bears or other gummy candy Water 2 Cups Salt Measuring cup Ruler Week 6: Larger box (bankers box size or larger) Extra flat cardboard (can re-purpose the box from week 5) Scissors/craft knife 2 Snack sized bags of 4 different candies (i.e. 2 small bags of Skittles, 2 bags of M&Ms, 2 small packs of Reese's, 2 standard sized Twix bars, etc) Glue stick/hot glue gun Week 7: Soda (use a diet soda for easier clean up) 2 Rolls of Mentos candy Space outside (this experiment must be done outside, or at least in a fully enclosed shower stall where a liquid mess won't destroy anything) If you can't find any of these items, please send me a message so that I can find a replacement item for you. Many of these items can be found around your home, and if you don't have them, I can usually find an easy replacement.
In this class, we will be using a lot of vinegar, baking soda, and salt, as well as scissors or a box cutter to cut thick cardboard. Please be nearby to supervise your student with the use of these items. We will also be using candy in all of our experiments. Please let me know if your Learner is allergic to any candy so that I can find an alternative.
