수업 소개
영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
This four-day, spelling conventions camp complements learners' conceptual understanding of structured word inquiry (SWI). SWI focuses on the structure, sound and history of English words, dispelling the myth that some English words are necessarily branded “irregular.” Structured word inquiry benefits: • Reading (decoding and comprehension) • Speaking and listening (strengthened vocabulary) • Writing (spelling and word choice) • Learners who need to know the “why” for spelling (i.e., learners with dyslexia). Each day’s instruction brings a new set of skills (magic formula) and complements the previous methods taught. Learners also experience friendly competition through gamification; and each lesson features a daily take-away. ***Daily camp activities: 1. Review previously learned concepts. 2. Introduce and collaboratively practice new ideas taught. Learners make educated guesses (hypotheses) about suffixing of words and adding the letter "E" to the end of words, test their hypothesis and draw word conclusions. 3. Gamify learning (Blooket, Flippity and Wheel of Names). Why engage in inquiry-based learning? **To encourage learners to think confidently, critically and creatively about words (and other things). *Words have a history, which means they have a story to tell. * Word inquiry leads to word power! Camp Word Wizards II aims to develop learners’ understanding and application of the three suffixing conventions that can appear after a base word. Learners also understand the nine reasons why English words can end in the letter "E;" and realize that English spelling isn’t always simple, but it’s clear. Camp Word Wizards I Introduction: Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) Ingredients: • Affixes: prefixes and suffixes • Graphemes, phonemes, morphemes • Orthography: Etymology, Morphology, Phonology • The 5 Es of Structured Word Inquiry: **Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate • The Essential 4 SWI Questions: ** What does the word mean (based on the context of the story)? ** What is its structure (including base word, prefixes and suffixes)? ** What are some relatives (other words in the same word family)? ** How do the letters (graphemes) function to spell a word)? • Root Words vs. Base Words • Free Bases vs. Bound Bases • Hand Gestures (tactile learning)
학습 목표
Students will be able to apply the three suffixing conventions to base words.
Students will be able to know when and why to add the letter "E at the end of a word.

1 주 이상레슨1:
The Doubling Convention
When adding a suffix, we double the final consonant. This applies under four conditions, including when the base element ends in a single consonant letter.

레슨2:
The (Replace the) E Convention
When adding a suffix or connecting vowel letter to another element, we replace the final E. This happens under two conditions, including when the final E in the stem is single and not pronounced.

레슨3:
The Y to I Convention
When adding a suffix to a stem that ends in the letter <y>, change the <y> to an <i> before adding any suffix that does not begin with <i>, whether it begins with a vowel or consonant letter.

레슨4:
The Remarkable Letter "E"

그 외 세부 사항
학습 요구
These spelling applications complement learners who need to know the "why" behind spelling words a particular way. For example, English words do not end in I, U, V or J. The letter E serves as a marker after those letters.
사전 요구 사항
Ideally, learners will have completed Camp Word Wizards I, which introduces the concept of structured word inquiry (SWI). This includes understanding that every word has a "base," which can be free or bound. Suffixes appear after the base.
