수업 소개
In this multi-day class, students will discover the properties of sound and use them to create their own "recycled" musical instruments. DAY ONE * What's a sound wave? * Qualities of Sound waves * Rubber band experiment * Chrome Music Lab experiment (high/low) DAY TWO * Water xylophone experiment (high/low) * Echoes and carrying sounds (loud/soft) * Soup can experiment (loud/soft) DAY THREE * Planning instruments (how will you meet each requirement?) * Graphic notation vs standard notation * Composing * Beginning to build instruments (if time allows) Homework: Finish your instrument before the next class. DAY FOUR * Instrument presentations! * Reflection Throughout the course, learners will have the chance to provide and receive feedback from and brainstorm alongside peers and myself. By the end of the series, students will have a thorough understanding of how sounds are produced and what a sound wave represents, will have finished their own home-made instruments, and will have composed a song for their instruments.

* Define "vibration", "amplitude", "frequency", and "wavelength";
* Identify high and low sounds;
* Identify loud and soft sounds;
* Describe the connection between the amplitude and frequency of a sound wave and the quality of sound it will produce;
* Create a plan for and build a home-made instrument that can demonstrate "high", "low", "loud", and "soft";
* Compose a song using high/low and loud/soft using graphic or standard notation.

수업 자료
Students are not mandated to use any particular materials to build their instruments, but should consider household supplies like cardboard, empty soup cans, paper clips, dried rice or beans, etc... to help to create their instruments. They may also want to have glue, tape, or other ways to fasten their pieces together. Please only use hot glue, superglue, or other potentially dangerous materials with adult permission and supervision. Students may want to follow along with the experiments, which I will demonstrate on camera. I will post learner "supply lists" in the classroom as the dates near, but objects can be easily found around the household and do not require purchase.

I have a Bachelor of Music Education with a minor in German, with Honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and am currently working towards my Master of Science in Instructional Design from George Mason University. My current teaching position at an arts integration + arts and tech school inspires me to teach in an interdisciplinary manner in which the arts, sciences, languages, math, and physical movement are intertwined. I am passionate about teaching to a wide variety of interests within my subject areas, including music technology, playing instruments, German language and culture, and creative movement using a cross-curricular approach.
I believe that each learner brings something unique to the table and that these differences should be celebrated. I encourage creative and divergent thinking. In my room, practice equals progress - not "perfection"! Regardless of subject area, the creative process is inevitably messy and involves making mistakes, which is what makes it so beautiful!
