수업 소개
The Multicultural Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Club courses will introduce students to sci-fi and fantasy authors from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds and explore the construction of modern and future worlds from the perspective of global experiences. This ongoing class will discuss a new book every two weeks, with one week off in between to give students time to read the next book. The goal is for students to: Develop the ability to analyze science-fiction and fantasy texts by looking at key concepts, including implied audience, plot construction, linguistic texture, authorial identity, publication context, and sociocultural context. Discuss the definitions, evolution, and purpose of the science fiction and fantasy genres. Describe and analyze common science fiction and fantasy themes, tropes, and modes of expression. Place representative works of science fiction and fantasy in a larger cultural, intellectual, and aesthetic context. This ongoing class will discuss a new book every two weeks, with one week off in between to give students time to read the next book. To facilitate the discussion, the week before we study each novel, I will send out discussion questions and a reference sheet that will give examples and definitions of any literary elements we will be learning in class. Please ensure that students have copies of the books as we read and discuss each book.
