In this one time class, students will first engage in a discussion about their thoughts and feelings about poetry. This will allow students to activate their prior knowledge on the subject. After, the students will be shown a presentation on Google Slides that will not only show examples of what Black Out poetry is, but also walk through, step by step, how to develop their own Black Out poems. Next, modeling will be used in order to demonstrate the process previously shown. Finally, students...
Students will need a text that they are able to draw on. This could be a newspaper, a page from a magazine, or an old book (check out your community for free Little Libraries or other locations to get free or inexpensive used books). If needed, the child could use a photocopied page of the book in replacement. Students will also need to come with: a note pad or piece of paper to jot ideas down and writing utenzils (I recommend a pencil, black marker and pencil crayons - markers are acceptable too!)
