In this one time class, students will first engage in a discussion about their thoughts and feelings about poetry. This will allow students to activate their prior knowledge on the subject. After, the students will be shown a presentation on Google Slides that will not only show examples of what Black Out poetry is, but also walk through, step by step, how to develop their own Black Out poems. Next, modeling will be used in order to demonstrate the process previously shown. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to create their own Black Out poems.
*** Please be aware that students will be PERMENANTLY drawing on the book, newspaper or magazine that they have brought to class. If it is a favourite that you do not want altered, please have the student come to class with a PHOTOCOPY of the page.
First, students will scan their chosen text (newspaper, magazine or book), for words that interest them. The student will jot the words on a note pad beside them. Next students will analyze the words that they have noted down and discuss as a group ideas for creating these words into a poem and ideas for the visual aspect of the art. Finally, students will be given the chance to create their poems by circling the words chosen and blacking out all other words. Here is the opportunity for students to express their visual arts creativity! At the end of the class (time permitting) students will share their Black Out poems with the group.

그 외 세부 사항

학부모 가이드
In this class, students will be viewing a Google Slides presentation through a screen share. They will not have to access their own Google slides.
수업 자료
Students will need a text that they are able to draw on. This could be a newspaper, a page from a magazine, or an old book (check out your community for free Little Libraries or other locations to get free or inexpensive used books). If needed, the child could use a photocopied page of the book in replacement.
Students will also need to come with: a note pad or piece of paper to jot ideas down and writing utenzils (I recommend a pencil, black marker and pencil crayons - markers are acceptable too!)

Hi! My name is Ms. Amanda and I was born to teach. I have two younger sisters and when I was little, I would play teacher with them all the time. As a child, I even taught my sister Sam how to read. I love reading and Harry Potter is my all-time favourite series (yes that is how you spell favourite in Canada).

Now that I am all grown up, I have had the pleasure to teach everything from Pre Kindergarten to grade 6, Adult Basic Education and college level courses. I was even the Principal and Student Support Teacher of a small school for a few years! I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, a BEd, a Masters of Science in Education with a specialist in reading and literacy and am currently a Doctoral Candidate.

I believe that all students can learn when the teacher recognizes student choice and multiple intelligences, and when strong relationships are fostered through listening and sharing. This will develop a lifelong love of learning.

I can't wait to virtually meet my students from across the continent!

Talk to you soon,
Ms. Amanda
