This course will explore a variety of topics that are related to small animal veterinary science. (Cats, dogs, etc) Recorded lesson videos will be supplemented with a variety of worksheets, optional projects and videos. Learners should have either taken an introductory veterinary science class or have some basic knowledge of veterinary science. Taking Advanced Vet Science 1 first is recommended, but not required. Week 1Lesson 1Dentistry - Terminology, Teeth and Dental DiseaseVeterinary dental terminology, and dental anatomy of dogs and cats. Stages of dental disease will also be discussedWeek 2Lesson 2Dentistry - Instruments/Equipment, Dental Cleaning Procedure, & Home Dental CareThe teacher will discuss the full dental cleaning procedure that is done in the veterinary hospital. Dental radiology will also be discussed. Some common home dental care information will be shared.Week 3Lesson 3Common Diseases and Medical Conditions Part 1Diseases and Medical Conditions. Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients. Feline leukemia and flea anemia will be discussed.Week 4Lesson 4Common Diseases and Medical Conditions Part 2Diseases and Medical Conditions. Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients. Canine and feline heart worm and kennel cough will be discussed.Week 5Lesson 5Common Diseases and Medical Conditions Part 3Diseases and Medical Conditions. Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients. Chronic renal failure, parvovirus and rabies will be discussed.Week 6Lesson 6Pharmacology Part 1These 2 lessons will discuss how veterinarians decide what medications a patient needs, and the importance of safety with handling, storage, and dispensing of medications. Students will practice simple math used to determine how many pills a patient would need, and how prescription labels are filled out. Over the counter medications such as flea and tick preventives will be discussed.Week 7Lesson 7Pharmacology Part 2These 2 lessons will discuss how veterinarians decide what medications a patient needs, and the importance of safety with handling, storage, and dispensing of medications. Students will practice simple math used to determine how many pills a patient would need, and how prescription labels are filled out. Over the counter medications such as flea and tick preventives will be discussed.Week 8Lesson 8Immunology and VaccinesA brief discussion on immunology will begin this lesson. What are vaccines and what do they do will be discussed briefly as well. How do vets and owners work together to decide what vaccines a pet needs and what vaccines are commonly given to dogs/cats, and puppies/kittens will be addressed.Week 9Lesson 9Parasitology Part 1The first part of this lesson will address hat a parasite is, what they do (or don't do_ to their “host”. How we test for parasites will be discussed. Microscope practice is encouraged but not required.Week 10Lesson 10Parasitology Part 2Learners will learn some facts about internal parasites and how to identify photos of what a number of parasites and parasite eggs look like under a microscope. Microscope practice is encouraged but not required.

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and an equine studies program as well as a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. Prior to teaching I was in management at one of the largest veterinary practices in my state. I am a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians and the American Association of Equine Technicians and Assistants. I am a lifelong learner myself and love sharing my excitement for learning! I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4cats! I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with all learners from diverse backgrounds from all around the world! If your learner has a dream to be a veterinary professional, then I am excited to help them on these first steps!
