This class is for beginners who have mastered basic prewriting skills, such as holding their pencil properly. Knowing how to write the alphabet in uppercase letters is recommended, but not required. I have been trained in the award-winning Handwriting Without Tears method of handwriting and use a similar philosophy to teach the lowercase letters. My multisensory approach to handwriting is more than practicing with paper and pencil. Learners are taught to form the letters based on simple shapes--lines and curves--and by letter placement on the writing lines. These concepts will be reinforced throughout the class. First, I will introduce the letter and demonstrate how it is formed. Next, we will form the letters using play dough. Then, we will use a dry erase board and dry erase marker to form the letters. Finally, we will practice writing the letters on paper using a crayon or marker. A sentence strip or strip of writing paper with lines works best for this task, but a full piece of paper can be used as well. Each week we will learn two lowercase letters as per the schedule below. The letters are learned out of alphabetical order and instead are taught by ease of writing, so all learners are able to start out with success and low frustration. The letter order we cycle through is c, o, s, v, w, t, a, d, g, q, l, e, u, i, y, j, j, r, n, m, p, h, b, f, x, z

Hello! I'm Jessica McKenna. I have a love of learning and enjoy bringing that passion to the classroom. My goal is to inspire your child to be passionate about learning as well.
I have 20 years of teaching experience both in-person and online. My journey teaching on Outschool began in April 2020 and I have been lucky enough to work with learners from all but one continent. In addition to my years teaching on this platform, I have also worked with children ages 3-13 in a variety of in-person capacities, including as a teacher, as a curriculum specialist, and the director of an early education center. I have been the educator of adults as well as children and have had the opportunity to teach other professionals on a wide range of topics including Foundations of Early Education and Positive Guidance in the Classroom.
I have my Bachelor’s Degree in both Art History and English from Rutgers University and am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th Grade. I am also trained in the Handwriting Without Tears approach to learning print and cursive penmanship and base my handwriting classes and tutoring around this program. Even with the ability to use technology to communicate, I believe that handwriting is an important, basic life skill that should not go unlearned. Cooking is another basic skill that is important, and it offers the opportunity to practice other subjects, most notably math, reading, and science.
My aforementioned love of learning lends itself to my being a life-long learner. I frequently participate in professional development and educational experiences, such as Integrated STEM and Working with Diverse Learners.
When I'm not in the virtual classroom or reading Jane Austen, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spoiling my cats.리뷰
