수업 소개

Scratch is an amazing, free, online coding platform created by MIT, which I believe is the best tool to get kids excited about coding!

I will explain how to use Scratch - how to use the editor, how to create interactivity, how to program. The class is project-based. I will show how to do things, and then give the kids time to try it on their own. It's very interactive. I keep the class small so that kids can ask questions at any time, share their work, and I can help if there are problems.

And in the end, they will have a unique, interactive card that is with a personal message that they can share with someone. Example ideas/templates will be a birthday card, thank you card, Happy Father's Day, and "Have a Great Day". But any card idea will be possible. So come with an idea of what card theme, and who it's for.

This is for beginner "Scratchers"
    - those who have never, ever used Scratch
    - those who have tried it once or twice
    - those who have tried it but want a quick refresher.

Is this class right for your child? Here's how to tell: ask them to log into their Scratch account. If they can't do that - this class is perfect! If they can log in, ask to see the projects they've made. If there are less than 6 or so (or if most of the projects are called "Untitled", and only have 1 cat and a white background), this class will be great.

Please make sure your child has a username and can sign into Scratch before class. It also helps if your child can type - just a little. They will need to be to write their greeting message. Copying a message from a pre-written file (like a Google Doc that a parent creates) is also fine.

Ideally, your child uses one computer where they can see both Zoom and Scratch (in a browser) at the same time. I give detailed instructions in the class communication. It is also helpful if an adult is close by during the beginning of class because some of the screen adjustments can't be made until class starts.
학습 목표
Students will earn how to use Scratch to build animations and interactive programs.
Students will learn how to add Sprites (characters), make them talk and move. They will also choose and edit a backdrop.
Students will learn how to make sequences of code, and how to create timing so that Sprites interact with each other.
Students will learn about Events and how to use them to run their code.
Students will have enough experience and confidence to start creating more projects on their own.

Please make sure your child has a Scratch account and can log into it - many kids forget their usernames and/or passwords. Unfortunately, if your child can't log in, you'll need to make a new account.
The hardest part of making a new account is coming up with a user name -- all the good ones are taken! I recommend having the child pick two favorite words and a favorite number and combining them together. "pizzacow17" for example. Pick a simple easy password. AND WRITE THEM DOWN SOMEWHERE!!!

Screen setup is really important in this class. I share my Scratch window on Zoom, and I expect that students can see my Scratch at the same time they work on their own Scratch window. I also ask students to share their screen when they run into difficulties so I can help them debug. This takes a good amount of screen space. Ideally a large screen on one computer (or laptop). Some students use two devices, but then they can't easily share their work with me. I don't recommend using one tablet (iPad) for the class, because the student can't see Zoom and Scratch at the same time (to the best of my knowledge).

Also, it helps to have an adult nearby at the beginning of the first class to help set up the student's display correctly. I check in with every student at the beginning of each class and help them set up. But many students don't know how to resize windows.

I teach coding classes using Scratch and micro:bit robotics on OutSchool. I truly believe that Scratch is the best coding platform for kids. And micro:bit is by far the best "physical computing" device for learning robotics! I love the excitement on students' faces when they have that "A-ha" moment and have learned something new that they can use.

I want kids to see themselves as creators of technology, not just consumers of tech. My classes are project-based -- I want the students to make something that they care about. My classes are fun and engaging.

I teach 2 types of classes: multiday and ongoing clubs. The multiday classes have more "formal" instruction - i.e. I teach 95% of the time. The multidays start with beginner classes go through a series for advanced beginners (Sorytelling or Game Design), and then end with advanced topics (like Building a 3D Maze). My ongoing clubs are designed so that I teach small "coding nuggets" for half the class, and then allow learners to share projects with the other half. My teaching is a smaller part of the class, and is less linear: kids can join or leave any time.

I am a software engineer who is a lifelong learner. I've been teaching coding professionally for over 8 years -- summer camps, afterschool and homeschool programs, and at the college level, at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I have a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and a MS in Engineering from CU Boulder, where my practicum project was focused on curriculum and software to engage girls in coding.

I am very active outdoors, and especially love to mountain bike and ski.
