This is a FLEX schedule class. There will be NO live meeting for this class. Students can participate in this class on their own schedule. Students will learn all about bats - where they live, what they eat, why they are important to people, and more. Students will learn about bats through discussions, games, and activities. We will also bust popular myths about bats! I will post a video at the beginning of each week. Students will need to watch the video within 24 hours of its posting time. They will have the remainder of the week to post their response in the classroom, via video or document. I will check for responses throughout the week, as they come in. I will also post additional information, videos, discussions, activities, games, quizzes, etc. in the classroom throughout each week. Students will participate in discussions and games with the other students, as well as with me. Students will also be able to post questions in the classroom, which I will answer throughout each day. General outline/timeline: Week 1- Introduction to myself and the class, introduction to bats, a quiz to discover what facts the students already know about bats and find out what questions they still have about bats. I will also talk about a few specific species of bats, and I will ask the students to research a bat that is local to them. They can post their discoveries as a video or type it directly in the classroom. Other students will be able to view submissions, and comment/discuss on each other's posts. Week 2- This week we will explore the physical structure of bats. I will provide many demonstrations, and students will get to make their own bat art/craft project, expressing their creativity! There will also be a group game this week! Students will participate directly in the classroom. Week 3- This week will focus on echolocation, how many bats find their food. Students will also research other animals that use this method of hunting for food, and post their findings in the classroom. I will also post questions in the classroom throughout the week, where students can discuss their answers with the other students. Week 4- This final week will be about bat conservation! Bats are extremely helpful and necessary for people! We will talk about the reasons why, talk about the decline of the bat population and what this means for people, and talk about what we can do to help. Students will also contribute to final discussions about everything they learned over the duration of the class.

Hello! My name is Christine and I am a Colorado native. I have two awesome sons, who are 11 and 21. I love to travel, explore, learn and teach about nature! I have been to all 50 US states, about 22 countries and I can't wait to finally get to see the rest of the world!!
I have an Associate of Science, in geology, and a Bachelors in geography and environmental studies from the University of Colorado.
I have taught science, in a variety of settings, over the past 18 years. During that time, I also worked as a tour guide at a local commercial cave! Geology rocks isn't just a catchy pun, it's a passion! I teach a variety of geography and geology-related classes. My classes combine lots of interaction with hands-on learning. I find that most people retain more information through doing something than just reading about it.
