Technique will be taught through structured activities, as well as with creative movement games and "silly songs," to keep young dancers engaged throughout the class. We use the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus. From SchoolworkHelper.net: "The Gilbert Syllabus has many merits as a teaching and learning tool. Because of the wide range of levels, it can be taught to any age category and any ability level. The syllabus is designed to accommodate the enthusiasm, as well as the lack of attention span of small children. In Primary, exercises introduce basic steps such as shuffle, hop, toe back, step, ball change, dig and marches. These elements are done slowly, with many holds. This allows beginning dancers to carefully execute new movements, and gives them the opportunity to concentrate, between each movement. The slow tempo also helps young dancers who have not developed acute fine motor skills." We will review ballet and tap steps learned each week, while reviewing and adding new creative movement activities each week. Students will be able to interact with the instructor and other dancers through the "challenge of the week," which may be a choreographic assignment or YouTube scavenger hunt. Assignments will be posted in the classroom so other learners can view, comment, and get to know each other.
