This ongoing cooking class for learners on the autism spectrum will focus on fostering independence by learning a safe no-stove recipe for making various meals. We will alternate between savory and sweet recipes. In addition to cooking, students will also have the opportunity for social opportunities by interacting with their peers.

Each week your learner can add the meals to their recipe book. Prior to beginning the cooking process, we will have a short group discussion about the learners favorite foods, recipes that they may have cooked or helped cook, and things that they have cooked in the microwave.

We will begin the class by reviewing microwave safety using a visual tool. I will model each step of the cooking process while also providing a visual recipe. This visual recipes will be available to you to print if your learner would like to use them later. We will then begin the cooking process. I will check in with learners frequently to ensure that they are following along.

This is a hands-on cooking class, so be sure to check the supply list for tools and ingredients. This cooking class does not use the stove or oven. All food is cooked in the microwave. Any student is welcome to observe without participating in the cooking portion if they would like to watch the recording of the class to make the meals later.

This is a beginner cooking class so no experience is required. Parental supervision is encouraged if you feel like your learner needs additional help while cooking. If your child has any dietary restrictions or food allergies let me know (substitutions can be made for most ingredients). This class is inclusive of all abilities. Please let me know if any accommodations need to be made to support your child.

Hello friends! my name is Clarissa Prigmore. I am so excited to meet you all and welcome you into my virtual classroom. My education career began when I volunteered as a Bocce coach in an elementary special education classroom. As a Bocce coach, I worked with the students on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and sportsmanship. My education experience continued when I joined the Student Council for Exceptional Children at my local university. In this organization, I was responsible for planning and organizing social events for individuals with disabilities within my community. This included monthly dances and gatherings in which I facilitated social skills groups. I then traveled to New Zealand where I became a nanny to a three-year-old boy. I followed a “wild school” curriculum that involved learning using nature. An example of this curriculum included a book study of The Three Little Pigs. After completing the book study, we continued our learning on the family homestead to gather straw, sticks, and bricks (rocks) to recreate the story. Upon leaving New Zealand, I obtained a master’s degree in special education with an emphasis in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I currently work as a coach leading mindfulness social skills groups for adolescents aged 9 to 16 diagnosed with autism. In addition to leading mindfulness groups I also facilitate reading and play social skills groups for children aged 4 to 8 diagnosed with autism. My passion is to help foster a sense of identity and independence in the learners that I work alongside. I can't wait to learn and grow with you!
