This class will be an introduction to the topic of “animal law” - law that pertains to animals as well as the topic of “animal rights law” - law that pertains to the individual rights of a single animal. First we will discuss the concept of law altogether - what is it exactly? What is “law” intended to do for us? Since this class will be taught in the context of the USA, we will need to get clear on the difference between case law and legislation, as well as how state and federal powers...
Begin to understand the complexity of laws pertaining to animals as well as the legal landscape as a whole. Any animal rights activists out there? All are welcome, students already familiar with law and or animal issues - and those that are not. Come learn and share. Valuable for anyone with an eye on a legal career or just wondering what the heck is going on when it comes to these other species around us. Let's talk!
I have a law degree from Lewis and Clark Law in Portland, Oregon where I was very focused on animal rights and environmental law. Prior to that, I was both a successful visual artist and a successful documentary filmmaker where I travelled the world and addressed topics vital to me - including the black humor documentary "Vacation in Chernobyl". I unschool my 3 very smart, happy children and lead workshops in various topics in the homeschool community.
I’ll be using a current Animal Law book and other legal resources but kids don’t need to bring anything except themselves, their interest, and a pen and notebook.
We won't get into the nitty gritty potential awfulness of various aspects of animal welfare or lack thereof in this class.
