This class is part of a series of patriotic classes exploring American Symbols. Students will discover the history of the Washington Monument. The class will begin with a patriotic song, and learners will view photos and learn history through a PowerPoint slideshow. My excitement about American symbols began with travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his iconic I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many students about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays. I love sharing American symbols with Outschool students! I am a licensed and experienced teacher for elementary students and for Pre-K through Grade 12 deaf/hard-of-hearing students. Additionally, I worked as an educational interpreter for several years.

• One piece of white construction paper • Watercolor paint • Paint brush • Cup of water • Black Sharpie marker • Pencil If these supplies are not available for your learner, the project can be done with markers and paper.
