Let's talk about the fun and educational aspects of your upcoming trip! ---> Learning Goals * I will be able to recognize the architecture of a western town in 1800s America. * I will be able to define the term, "Frontier" and understand why people chose to move out west. * I will be able to locate the St. Louis Arch, Mississippi River and "the West". * I will be able to list the transportation related to "the Frontier". * I will be able to identify the tale of Pecos Bill. ---->Warm-Up * Students will be able to activate prior knowledge by using a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" to show if they have or have not heard of the vocabulary terms below. The teacher will share the definitions of these terms in the event that students have any misconceptions. ---> Vocabulary Terms * Frontier * Westward Expansion * Architecture * Mississippi River * Pioneers * Tall Tale ----> Activities/Learning * Students will be (virtually) traveling to Orlando, FL to explore Westward Expansion in the United States via Disney attractions. *We will take a look at attractions in the Magic Kingdom and how they are loosely based on America's history and expansion. We will be using the attraction to spring board us into the History of Westward Expansion. ~ Attraction 1: Transportion ( Liberty Belle- Rivers of America, covered wagons, trains) ~ Attraction 2: Tom Sawyer's Island and The Mighty Mississippi River (The importance of the Mississippi River) ~ Attraction 3: Thunder Mountain (The architecture and landscape of Westward Expansion) ~ Attraction 4- Peco's Bill Cafe (Tall tale set in Westward Expansion) * Through discussion, questioning and activities students will learn more about this period in the history of the United States. * This is a chronological continuation of American History through Disney's Magic Kingdom and Liberty Square, however it is not a required prerequisite. ----> Wrap-Up * There will be an exit ticket aligned to the learning targets. Students will be provided with the correct answers prior to leaving.

Please note that my love of factual history and working with learners of all ages continually leads me to the website, Common Sense Education. While we look at why particular attractions are located in Frontierland, all historical information stems from the following sources; Smithsonian's History Explorer, Library of Congress, National Archives and Voices of Democracy. More about these sources can be found at Common Sense Education (https://www.commonsense.org/education/top-picks/best-us-history-websites-for-students).
We will only be using the Disney attractions as a symbol to teach us about the actual history of the Frontier.
