All About Astronomy! Studying the Universe

In this class, students will learn about the universe including the planets in our solar system, and learn the answers to the following questions: 1. What is a solar system/galaxy/universes? What is a star? What do we know about stars? 2. What planets exhibit in our solar system, including dwarf planets (and why Pluto is no longer a planet) 3. What are asteroids, comets, black holes, and what other debris exists in the universe? 4. How have we learned all of what we know about the universe...
4 lessons//4 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Solar SystemStudents will learn about the solar system, as well as what a galaxy is and the universe. Students will gain a deeper understanding of stars and how they are classified.Week 2Lesson 2PlanetsStudents will learn about the planets in our solar system and what makes them each unique, as well as why Pluto is not a planet anymore.Week 3Lesson 3Asteroids, Comets, and Black HolesStudents will learn about asteroids and comets, identifying key differences from there. Students will learn about a black hole.Week 4Lesson 4TechnologyStudents will learn what technologies have helped us explore the universe, including inside and outside our solar system.
Students will learn about the universe and the different parts of it including suns, solar systems, the planets within our solar system, space objects, and technologies used to study the universe.
As a dedicated teacher with twelve years of experience teaching elementary and middle school science from 6th to 8th grade, as well as over 5 years as an Outschool educator, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom. With a science teaching license spanning grades 6 to 12 and a Master's degree in Science Education, I am passionate about making learning meaningful by connecting it to real-world experiences. My teaching approach focuses on facilitating connections between students and the material, making it easier to grasp and retain. I employ a review pattern that starts with foundational concepts and gradually progresses to more complex information, ensuring thorough understanding and long-term retention among students.
Homework Offered
Students will receive weekly activities for learning extension, as well as access to kahoot review game and breakoutedu.com review games (not to be confused with Zoom breakout rooms).1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will receive an assessment at the end of the course to assess mastery of the content instructed.Grades Offered
Students will be provided hand-outs for notes to keep for their possession each week, along with printable resources for activities. Students will also need a pencil to complete activities.

Material covered in this course refers to the universe and will discuss exploration and what we know about other planets. While alien life will not be discussed, the discussion that life may exist on other planets due to our limited knowledge of other solar systems will be briefly mentioned.
Students will be provided note takers created by instructor, as well as access to Super Science Magazine through the teacher and publication rights. Students will gain reading passages and webquest created by instructor as well to supplement for learning extensions. Use of kahoot.com (upon request) and breakoutedu.com will be used for class content practice through games.
