From medical treatments to vaccines, we owe thanks to Henrietta Lacks. In this class, students will learn about the Life of Henrietta Lacks. We will talk about her diagnosis of cervical cancer and how her cells were used to advanced medical research and medical treatment to cure different illnesses. Her cells are some of the most important immortal cells used in the medical/science field today.  Students will understand how The Hela cells gave researchers the hope to understand, treat and prevent diseases. Her cells have helped over 10 million people. However, her cells were used without her consent (unethically). Students will learn about the long history of medical experimentation on African Americans dating back to the time of slavery.  We will talk about racism and how it has played a role in the unjustifiable usage of black people in science.   By the end of class, students will understand why Henrietta Lacks is an important part of medical history. 


This class will be very informative and it also connects to my other African American classes. This lesson will be interactive, and each student will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions. If you have any questions about the class or suggestions please send a message.
