Welcome to Black History Candy Lab! A project based class dedicated to the untold stories of African American History in the candy realm and everything sweet just for kids! Each class learners will learn about 1 new pioneer who broke racial barriers. Learners will also engage in a hands on activity or lab each class. Day 1 - Norbert Rillieux | Rock Candy -Students will learn about the structure and properties of matter - different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. -Students will learn about chemical reactions - heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not. -Students will learn about the life and contributions of Norbert Rillieux. Norbert Rillieux was a a mid-19th century engineer of African American descent, was sent by his father to Paris at the age of 23. Not only did he become the youngest engineer professor in Paris, he also invented an evaporating system to be used in making sugar. 🍬 Lab/Project: Make Your Own Rock Candy! (please note this experiment takes time to develop, learners won't be able to taste for a few weeks. Day 2 - Mary Spencer | MARSHMALLOW SLIME -Students will learn about the structure and properties of matter - different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. -Students will learn about chemical reactions - heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not. -Students will learn about the life and contributions of Mary Spencer from Salem, Massachusetts who created a candy called Gibralter. After having incredible success selling her confections on the steps of the First Church in Salem, she bought a horse and buggy and took to selling from town to town. 🍬 Lab/Project: MARSHMALLOW SLIME Day 3 - Alfred L. Cralle | GROWING GUMMY BEARS -Students will learn about the structure and properties of matter - different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. -Students will learn about chemical reactions - heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not. -Students will learn about the life and contributions of Alfred L. Cralle, who was an African American businessman and inventor best known for inventing the ice cream scoop in 1897. 🍦 Lab/Project: GROWING GUMMY BEARS Day 4 - Augustus Jackson | BUILDING CANDY GUM DROP STRUCTURES -Students will learn about the structure and properties of matter - different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. -Students will learn about chemical reactions - heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not. -Students will learn about the life and contributions of Augustus Jackson. Augustus Jackson was a candy confectioner from Philadelphia who created several ice cream recipes and invented an improved method of manufacturing ice cream around 1832. 🍦 Lab/Project: BUILDING CANDY GUM DROP STRUCTURES Day 5: Review -Supplemental video of Rock Cycle Lab/Project : STARBURST ROCK CYCLE and Gimkit Review Game
