Mastering spelling can be challenging, even for strong readers. Our class offers explicit, systematic spelling instruction to help students succeed. Using 'Pop-its' or alternatives, we'll segment words, match sound/spelling combinations, and build essential spelling skills through engaging lessons.

Each class includes:

A 'Super Important Question'
Mini-lessons on spelling rules or patterns (with games or activities)
Word dictation (using the 'pop, write, check' method when necessary)
Sentence dictation

Weekly word lists for additional at-home practice activities are provided.

Week of September 9: Schwa (hints for the vowel)
Week of September 16: Reasons for silent e part 1 (magic, soft c/g)
Week of September 23: Reasons for silent e part 2 (plurals, function words)
Week of September 30: Compound words
Week of October 7: Common silent consonants (wr, kn, gn, mb, gu)
Week of October 14: NO CLASS
Week of October 21: Words with -ion suffix (s)
Week of October 28: Words with -ion suffix (t)
Week of November 4: : Words with ate+ion suffixes (ation)
Week of November 11: Words with a in unaccented syllables
Week of November 18: -able and ible
Week of November 25: NO CLASS
Week of December 2: ei and ie
Week of December 9: -ture

Learners will improve their reading accuracy and speed while learning advanced spelling topics, including common suffixes, etymology's influence on spelling, and other advanced topics.

This class uses strategies aligned with the Science of Reading, which support all learners (including dyslexic learners) in attaining the skills necessary to read.

Learners should take my basic spelling class first or feel confident in the topics in that class.
수업 자료
Learners need a white board and marker (or paper with pen/dark enough writing implement that I'm able to see their writing throughout class). Learners may benefit from using a "pop-it" to hear words in the sounds. 

Hand-outs with weekly spelling practice will be made available after class.

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach through IMSE (30-hour) and the Reed Charitable Foundation Classroom Educator (30-hour course).
