This class supports Common Core State Standards: CCRA.ELA – Literacy SL6.1 – 9.1, 6.2 – 9.2, 6.3 – 9.3, 6.4 – 9.4,
Students will:
1.	Learn about the topic assigned.
2.	Use research skills to prepare for the debate.
3.	Work together in a team before and during the debate.
4.	Practice public speaking skills.
5.	Use critical thinking skills to “think on their feet” to come up with respectful and effective responses to the opposing team’s position.

I am a licensed teacher & have worked with elementary - high school students on a range of communication skills to include competitive debate and public speaking, reading and writing, and mock trial for over 25 years.

Each weekly topic will be posted in the classroom 6 days before class. To be prepared, participants need to  learn about the topic outside of class to gather knowledge on the subject.

General feedback will be provided team-wide after each debate. When teams are waiting for their turn to debate, they may have the role of scoring the participating teams on a rubric. This helps learners to focus on the elements of debate which helps them improve their own skills.
