In this class, students will be taking a historical journey through the winter holidays of the Victorian era (1837-1901). Students will learn about and experience elements of the season through historical accounts, songs, and stories. We will also look at and discuss decorations, events, and recipes. Questions that will be answered: 1. How did Queen Victoria celebrate Christmas? 2. How did the holiday celebrations differ between the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada? 3. What traditions from the time period are still around today? The class format is a lecture style with a PowerPoint presentation. Discussion and questions are welcome and encouraged!

Students will understand how winter holidays were celebrated in the late 19th century in parts of Europe and North America.

One popular feature of the Victorian holiday season was the telling of ghost stories. We will be discussing this aspect and students will also be introduced to a ghost story.
