Are you interested in ancient civilizations? Do you want to learn about ancient civilizations and archaeology? Do you like being creative while you learn? This is the class for you!

Although the topic changes every week, each class is a standalone lesson, and the format of the class remains the same. In the first 40-45 minutes, the learners will be introduced to the ancient civilization of the week. We will talk about its geographic location, the time period in question, important archaeological sites and their treasures, the rise and fall of the culture, and so much more! I create my classes so students get a good overall understanding of the civilization and a mix of interesting, surprising, and even silly fun facts! I also include the latest archaeological information and theories when possible. I teach in an open lecture style, where I go through engaging slides, stories, ancient texts, and information. Students are asked open-ended questions throughout the lesson and are encouraged to ask questions of me at any time. The informal tone of the class invites the learners to participate as they feel comfortable.

I encourage learners to create their own drawings as we discuss the topics of the week, should they wish to do so. I can suggest a few artefacts or buildings for them to draw, but they can also choose anything that they like from the presentation. They can even draw a comic strip that reflects the civilization that we examined. I encourage all my learners to ask questions, whether verbally or through chat. If there are no questions, this is a time when we can talk about anything archaeological, and I am always happy to tell them stories and fun facts about being an archaeologist!

In the last minutes of the lesson, students can share their masterpieces with the class and can reflect on what they have learned.

This ongoing course is a great option for students who want to drop in and out according to their interests or school curriculum. Each class is completely standalone! The list of topics includes suggestions from learners and parents, and also some of my favourites. Class topics are scheduled at least one month in advance.

I will present the class material through the use of slides, both from my own private collection and from archaeological excavations and museum collections. The students will look at the archaeological material and learn how to interpret it, and discover that evidence can lead to different opinions. I strongly believe that all evidence must be investigated and viewed equally, and I do reinforce this important concept every week. As an archaeologist, I base my classes on scholarly texts, scientific secondary sources such as textbooks, scholarly journals (Archaeology Magazine, National Geographic, Penn University publications, etc.), and archaeological reports, while keeping it age appropriate. I also use primary sources, for example Homer, English translations of Egyptian hieroglyphs, Latin texts, etc. Other visuals than my own are drawn from sites such as Open Licensed Images, Ancient World Image Bank, World History Encyclopedia, the New York Public Library Digital Collection, and Public Domain Pictures. All sites allow for free use of images, with credits. Learners do not need to access any sites during class.

I am a trained archaeologist, and I excavated at sites such as Mytilene and Kommos in Greece for many field seasons. I have travelled extensively through Europe, and I have taught Greek and Roman art, archaeology and mythology at Concordia University, Montréal. I held a position at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, where I created and led tours for children on the topics of Greek, Roman and Egyptian archaeology, the Medieval period, dinosaurs and natural history. More recently, I have taught labs on water science and solar energy to Kindergarten and Grade 1 students through Scientists in School. Since July 2021, I have had the pleasure of teaching many archaeology and ancient civilizations classes on Outschool.
