In this 12-session course, students will learn about aeronautics by diving into “The Beginner’s Guide to Aeronautics” curriculum developed by NASA's Glenn Research Center. Have you ever wondered how airplanes fly? Airplanes, gliders and helicopters all stay midair due to the principles of the flight science called aeronautics. These include the physics concepts of Newton's laws of motion, aerodynamics, the motion of air, and Bernoulli's principle of lift. During the course, a variety of...
12 lessons//12 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Newton's 3 Laws of MotionIntroduction to the course and Newton's Laws of Motion via the context of aeronautics and everyday life.Week 2Lesson 2The Wright WayBased on the NASA lesson of the same name, this session discusses the history and physics of the Wright Brothers' early aircraft.Week 3Lesson 3Intro to Jet PropulsionSession 3 utilizes NASA curriculum on jet propulsion and reviews Newton's 3 Laws of Motion in the context of jet propulsion.Week 4Lesson 4Aerodynamics of Baseball and Bernoulli's PrincipleThe Aerodynamics of baseball is a NASA curriculum lesson that discusses Bernoulli's principle and includes an interactive baseball pitch simulator. Key aeronautic concepts are explored in the context of baseball.Week 5Lesson 5Model Rockets and Real RocketsThis session investigates the similarities and differences between model rockets and real rockets. The Rocket Equation is discussed.Week 6Lesson 6Water RocketsWater rockets are an excellent beginner rocket since they don't require flammable materials. The physics and how-to of building a water rocket are reviewed.Week 7Lesson 7Kite and Wind TunnelsBased on the NASA lessons about Kites and Wind Tunnels, we will explore how and why kites fly. We'll also discuss wind tunnels and how students can build their own wind tunnel.Week 8Lesson 8Aircraft Motion and AerodynamicsThis session discusses aircraft motion as related to aerodynamics, and introduces concepts for how pilots steer aircraft.Week 9Lesson 9Electric Aviation InnovationsThe aircraft industry is developing new electric aircraft to address concerns of climate impacts of air travel. This session explores recent innovations in electric aviation design and engineering.Week 10Lesson 10Compressible AerodynamicsHigh-speed aerodynamics is its own category, called "Compressible Aerodynamics," referring to the compression of fluid (air) at high speeds. As aircraft approach and exceed the speed of sound, the fluid dynamics change considerably. This session introduces this special category of flight.Week 11Lesson 11HypersonicsSession 11 continues the exploration of high-speed air flight, discussing aircraft flying at hypersonic speeds (Mach 5 and above).Week 12Lesson 12Aerodynamics of Multirotor DronesOur final class session explores the physics and mechanics of drones and helicopters.
Week-by-week Course Topics: Session 1 - Intro to the field of Aeronautics and Newton's Laws of Motion Session 2 - Reliving the Wright Way Session 3 - Beginners Guide to Jet Propulsion Session 4 - Aerodynamics of Baseball and Bernoulli's Principle Session 5 - Model Rockets and Real Rockets Session 6 - Water Bottle Rockets and Aerodynamics Session 7 - Kites and Wind Tunnels Session 8 - Aircraft Motion and Aerodynamics Session 9 - Electric Aviation Innovations Session 10 - Compressible Aerodynamics Session 11 - Guide to Hypersonics Session 12 - Aerodynamics of multirotor drones
This course is taught by Quantum Physics for Kids instructor Prof. Mark Baraket (M.S. Astrophysics UC Berkeley), a professional astrophysicist with a commitment to teaching the next generation of scientists. Quantum Physics for Kids is dedicated to introducing young students to the amazing world of quantum physics, invention & science research! We've been offering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) classes and creating educational materials for students of all ages for over 15 years. We're excited to share this course content with more students through Outschool.
