In this ongoing class students will review 6th grade math concepts based on the common core standards. Students will then practice solving problems and doing calculations using different methods. It is not required for students to attend every week but can drop in as needed to practice various skills. Students should already be familiar with these concepts. The goal of this class is to give students a solid understanding of the fundamental standards they are expected to learn during the 6th grade year. These concepts are important building blocks to future math success. The specific goal for each class is as follows: Students can: Week 1: Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems Week 2: Use ratio rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Week 3: Addition and Subtraction of multi-digit decimals Week 4: Multiplication of multi-digit decimals Week 5: Division of multi-digit decimals Week 6: Greatest Common Factor (Word Problems) Week 7: Division and Multiplication of fraction Week 8: Positive and negative numbers Week 9: Rational numbers Week 10: Rational numbers - Ordering and Absolute Value Week 11: Exponents Week 12: Expressions and Variables Week 13: Inequalities Week 14: Area Week 15: Volume Week 16: Surface Area Lessons will repeat after week 16
I have taught math in a traditional 5th grade classroom for more than 15 years.
I would suggest the students have a math notebook or folder to take and keep the handouts. Students can save this information to review and refer to in future classes. I will provide handouts and printables as needed for each class. A dry erase board and marker would be great for working out problems to show. If that is not available please have paper and a pencil.
I will post optional Youtube videos to watch prior to class in order to review the concepts. Youtube does require a google account to watch videos. This is an optional part of the class and it will be no problem to continue with the course if you choose not to watch the videos, At the beginning of class students will be provided with a link to Nearpod to join the lesson. No account is required to join. I will also be sharing the lesson so if the student prefers not to join through Nearpod that is no problem.
