PREREQUISITE🧠: English Grammar and Writing Semester 1 or previous English grammar instruction. Many concepts in the second semester build on the first. Semester 1 students have learned to diagram the simple subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, predicate complements, prepositional phrases, adjectives. See the FAQ below to see if your learner would be a good fit for semester 2. OVERVIEW🐦: In this 15-week second semester class, students will exceed state standards as they work through the second half of the level 5 comprehensive grammar and writing program. Not only will students gain competency in English grammar, but they will also have a blast doing it. This class is excellent for both native and non-native speakers. The content includes a United States history theme. This class is designed to support parents and students by introducing the material for the week and setting a pace for completing the course. If students need more support, I will have tutoring hours available each week. Learners MUST purchase the books for this course (see links below). The first ten lessons will be provided electronically so that we can get started with learning as some learners wait for their textbooks to arrive. CLASS STRUCTURE👩🏫👩💻: With the wonderful routine, learners will know what to expect for each class. Learners should be in the waiting room at least one minute before class begins. Class will begin promptly with dictation. Students will write as the teacher reads a few history or geography themed sentences. Then, through lecture and interactive presentation slides, the teacher will walk students through the new lesson material. To ensure that they are grasping the new concepts, students will be prompted to participate during instruction and answer questions. During and after instruction, students are encouraged to ask questions. The teacher will break up the lessons with grammar humor, I Spy, Would You Rather?, Read My Lips, and other engaging activities. Each class will cover approximately four grammar lessons and one writing lesson for one week's worth of instruction. Last, the teacher will give a daily breakdown for homework assignments. There are five Kahoot tests which will be assigned throughout the semester. After class, students will complete the coursework for the lessons covered during class. A recommended daily homework breakdown will be provided. Students can go back and re-watch the lessons throughout the week as needed. They are welcome to message the teacher throughout the week with any questions on assignments. The answer key is in the teacher guide for students or guardians to check their own work. TYPICAL WEEKLY STRUCTURE📚: Day 1- Class with Teacher Stephanie (all lessons taught for the week), Journal topic Day 2- Writing assignment, Dictation Day 3- Grammar assignment, Journal topic Day 4- Grammar assignment, Journal topic Day 5- Grammar assignment, Dictation retry, Kahoot Test ABOUT THE CURRICULUM📘: English Grammar: This rigorous program focuses on English grammar, writing, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Many concepts in the second semester build on the first. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation rules are sprinkled throughout. The spiraling incremental lessons are designed with reintroduction of concepts and opportunities to review. By the end of this course, students should have an excellent grasp on most concepts. This curriculum is designed for 5th grade, but a new to English grammar 6th grader would do well in this class. Writing: Students will have weekly writing lessons, in which they will be given a great foundation for writing style and structure. They will learn how to produce strong interesting sentences, as well as paragraphs, and essays. They will also implement the different purposes for writing (narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive). You can expect students to write many paragraphs and two essays in the first semester. During the second semester, they will write four essays. Learners will have plenty of opportunities with spelling and mental processing through dictations (writing down sentences spoken orally). Finally, learners will keep a journal for writing for weekly journal topics provided in class. The curriculum can be purchased here: https://www.rainbowresource.com/product/051749/Grammar-%2526-Writing-5-Full-Bundle-School-Edition.html? TECHNOLOGY🎧: To avoid technology complications during class, I strongly recommend learners invest in a good headset. I use the Logitech H390 which can be found on Amazon. Also make sure you have a strong internet connection. Also, we often use Zoom's annotate (draw on screen) feature during class. Please note that Chromebooks DO NOT support this feature. DISCOUNTS💰: ***Get a $25 discount on the enrollment of a second learner for any grammar course.*** One discount per family RESCHEDULING POLICY ⌛ If a meeting must be cancelled due to teacher illness or outage, it will either be rescheduled for a later date or sent out as recorded lessons at the teacher's discretion. Recorded, makeup lessons will occur no more than twice in a semester. After this the semester will be extended to make up for the meetings. I have a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from Wright State University. My degree qualifies me to teach language arts. My professional teaching experience includes teaching students from ages 3-15 in a variety of different settings: public school, home school, a classical home school group, and virtually from my home classroom.
I have 3 years prior experience teaching through an intensive 4th-6th grade English grammar and writing program using a classical group curriculum. Finally, I currently give direct English grammar instruction to Chinese students from ages 3-15 through teaching English online.
