Welcome to Wild and Unstructured Learning’s Full Curriculum 5th Grade!  We can’t wait to spend the school year with you.  We focus on project based and hands on learning.  We are committed to providing a safe and fun atmosphere for your child to grow with all of their educational and social needs met.  We often team up in groups or work individually with the teacher.  In this class you can expect every subject listed. We welcome all learners! Wild and Unstructured Learning incorporates play and activity into each lesson.  Your child wont be able to wait to come to class.  


All of these subjects will be taught hands on.  

You can expect for your child to learn the following subjects-
Reading, Language/Grammar, Spelling, Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Economics, Civics, Geography and Math.

Week of September 2nd-
-Writing- Short Story
-Reading- Realistic Fiction
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Reading, marking and explaining coordinates
              Comparing measurement conversions
              Finding the value of a digit
-Civics- Checks and balances
-Science- Animal adaptations

Week of September 9th-
-Writing- Short Story
-Reading- Realistic Fiction
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Finding patterns in place value
              Problem solving using place value
-Geography- Maps!  Let's make one!
-Science- Hibernation and the body's response to it.
-Economics- Smart Decision Making

Week of September 16th-
-Writing- Short Story
-Reading- Historical Fiction
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Add fractions by finding a common denominator
             Adding mixed number fractions
-Science- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
-Civics- Rights and responsibilities 

Week of September 23rd-
-Writing- Short Story
-Reading- Historical Fiction
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Subtracting fractions from whole numbers 
              Evaluate expressions with brackets
-Economics- Financial Well being
-Science- Gravity

Week of September 30th-
-Writing- Opinion Writing
-Reading- Nonfiction Articles
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Solve problems with a coordinate grid
              Graphing problems with a coordinate grid
-Civics- Democracy
-Science-transport systems in animals 

Week of October 7th-
-Writing- Opinion Writing
-Reading- Nonfiction Articles
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Economics- Budgeting
-Math- Represent real world problems by graphing points
              Creating line plots
-Science-transport systems in animals 

Week of October 14th-
-Writing- Opinion Writing
-Reading- Magical Realism
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Geography-Globes.  Can we create our own?  Can we go in either direction and always get to where we wanted to go?  
-Science- Laws of motion
-Math- Answering questions about line plots
             Using Line plots to solve problems

Week of October 21st-
-Writing- Opinion Writing
-Reading- Magical Realism
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Multiply and divide by powers of ten
              Power of ten and exponents
-Civics- About Our Criminal Justice System
-Science- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Week of October 28th-
-Writing- Expository Essay
-Reading- Poetry
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Explaining patterns in powers of ten
              Using powers of ten with exponent
-Civics- Citizenship. What is it?  
-Science- What Is Matter Made Of 

Week of November 4th-
-Writing- Expository Essay
-Reading- Poetry
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Solving fraction word problems
              Multistep fraction word problems
-Geography- Buffalo, Opossum, Raccoons!  Where are they from?  Let's find their place on the map!
-Science- Identifying Substances

Week of November 11th-
-Writing- Expository Essay
-Reading- Fiction in Verse
-Spelling-  Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math-Understanding decimal place value
             Read and write decimals
-Science- Materials and Matter
-Civics- Family. Let's talk about the responsibilities of families as a unit 

Week of November 18th-
-Writing- Expository Essay
-Reading- Fiction in Verse
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Write an expression
              Interpret expressions
-Economics- Debt and Credit, Keeping track of finances
-Science-  Conservation of Matter 

Week of November 25th- NO CLASS Fall Break

Week of December 2nd-

-Math- Describe 2D shape attributes
             Classifying 2d shape attributes- Triangles
-Economics- Investing
-Science- Chemical Reaction and Changes

-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Geography- Jaguars, Sloth, Capybaras!  Where are they from?  Let's find their place on the map!
-Math- Classifying 2d shape attributes-Quadrilaterals
             Compare 2d shapes
-Science- Chemical Reaction and Changes 

Week of December 16th-
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Writing- Personal Narrative
-Reading- Legends
-Geography-Moose, Wolves, Lynx!  Where are they from?  Let's find their place on the map!
-Science- Earths Four Systems
-Math- Volume using unit cubes

Week of January 6th-

-Math- Compare 2 decimals              
              Represent Division as a Fraction 
-Civics- Community. What am I expected to do in my community?

Week of January 13th-

-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math-  Fraction Value
               Fractions as Division Problems
-Civics- Families long ago. We will discuss the responsibilities of people long ago and how they needed them for survival. Today is different in our ability to be more independent as we don't have to follow a certain path to survive.  
-Science- Weather and Climate

Week of January 20th-
-Reading- Science Fiction
-Writing- Persuasive Writing
-Spelling- Students will have a spelling list each week
-Math- Generate Numerical Patterns
              Generate and Compare Numerical Patterns
-Geography- Rhinoceros, Cheetahs, Elephants!  Where are they from?  Let's find their place on the map!
