레벨 Intermediate
Each week features a new nonfiction article, so students can join when their schedule permits without worrying about having missed information from a previous class. Students can bring popcorn or any other snack to class and munch along as we read a nonfiction article tailored for a 5th and 6th-grade reading level. This class will focus on students learning to comprehend complex concepts and technical language in a fun environment. Students will read a portion of the passage, and when the teacher yells out "Popcorn," another student will be picked to continue reading. Each student will be given the opportunity to read out loud during the class. After finishing the article, students will answer comprehension, discussion, and vocabulary questions. The questions will consist of various formats, such as written responses, matching, multiple-choice, or fill-in-the-blank. Students will read the following non-fiction reading articles for the first four weeks of class: Week #1: (Sept 9-15): Tales of Faithful Service: roles animals played in World War 1. Week #2 :(Sept 16-22): Tree Giants: facts about redwood and sequoia trees of California Week# 3: (Sept 23-29): A Lizard with a Blue Tongue: an animal that can regrow its tail. Week #4: (Sept 30-0ct 6): Skydiving: equipment, training, and world skydiving records All articles are written for a fifth and sixth-grade level. However, the class is not limited to students in these grades. All advanced 3rd and 4th-grade readers or upper-grade students interested in reading nonfiction articles are welcome to sign up. Articles will be posted to the classroom the night before for students to print. Although I understand that not all students may have access to a printer, so please don't let printing issues prevent your student from joining the class. I will always display the article and questions on the screen for students to view. I recommend that students bring a scratch paper to write down their answers if they do not have the printout. Students can also bring one item to share at the end of class, such as a toy, pet, book, drawing, gaming device, etc.
