This nontraditional, hands-on and discovery based course is perfect for a home-school curriculum or to use as a review. Students will explore number relationships by doing hands-on activities, looking for patterns, and solving complex problems. There are three primary goals of this course: 1. Students to develop flexible math thinking (the ability to see relationships and use those relationships to solve problems in a variety of ways) 2. Students to gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities 3. Students to gain not just school knowledge but real-life critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Due to the nature of this course, it is important for students to come to class with their cameras on and be ready for discussion. Each class will follow the following format: Warm Up Activity that works on developing mental math skills, and number flexibility, a hands on activity or a complex problem for students to work through together, a summation of the key idea for the day, and an exit question (they will submit their answer privately in the chat) I will use this exit question as an informal assessment of your learner’s progress. I keep detailed notes of each learner's progress for their time in my classes. A transcript will be sent with personalized information at the end of the semester. Please note: There will be an optional follow-up activity at the end of each week for you to use as homework. If students submit to me privately, I provide feedback. The course will follow the following schedule: Winter/Spring 2025 Week of January 6: Understanding Fractions Week of January 13: Understanding Equivalence Week of January 20: Finding Equivalent Fractions (4.NF.A) Week of January 27: Comparing and Ordering Fractions (4.NF.A) Week of February 3: Working with Equal Groups of Fractions (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B) Week of February 10: Patterns in Fractions and Equal Groups of Non Unit Fractions (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B) Week of February 17: Equivalent Expressions and Problem Solving (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B) Week of February 24: Fractions as Sums and Adding Fractions (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B) Week of March 3: Differences/Subtraction of Fractions (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B) Week of March 10: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Problem Solving (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B, 4.MD.B) Week of March 17: No Class Week of March 24: Line Plots and Measurements with Fractions (4.NF.A, 4.NF.B, 4.MD.B) Week of March 31: Understanding and Reasoning with Tenths and Hundredths (4.NF.C) Week of April 7: Understand Decimals (4.NF.C) Week of April 14: Decimals on a Number Line (4.NF.C) and Compare/Order Decimals (4.NF.C) Week of April 21 Points, Lines, Segments, and Angles (4.MD.C, 4.G.A) Week of April 28: The size of angles, measuring and reasoning (4.MD.C, 4.G.A) Week of May 5: Attributes and Symmetry (4.MD.C, 4.G.A) Week of May 12: Reasoning to solve Geometric Problems (4.MD.C, 4.G.A)

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
