Upon request, I will provide parents with a brief report outlining the Next Generation Science Learning Standard for each week and whether their learner met the standard or needs more work on a particular standard. In order to receive the report from me, parents must send me a direct message with the request and the name of their learner or learners.보고계신 지문은 자동 번역 되었습니다

"Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world." -Louis Pasteur "History is safe. Geometry is safe. (Science is) punk rock!" -Paul Rudd in Ghostbusters: Afterlife Everything is science. Everything you see and hear, taste and touch, feel and say. There is science in all of it. Over the next semester, we will use common household items to understand scientific concepts and to find some of the places we can see science in our lives. This class covers four areas of science. Weeks 1-7, we will work on Physical Science with a look at energy. In weeks 8-11, we will work on Life Science and look at form and function. Weeks 12-16, we'll look at Earth and Space and look at how the earth changes and the impact humans have on it. In weeks 17-20, we'll discover engineering and look at design problems and constraints as well as thinking about improvements on existing inventions. The class meets once a week. When class begins each week we will take a few minutes for everyone to check-in. Then Ms. Brenda will lead a discussion on the topic for the week. In some classes, we may watch a short video that shows what we are learning about. Each lesson will also include a hands-on activity. The activity will demonstrate the topic. Please see the supply list for everything required for the hands-on activity. Schedule Unit One: Physical Science Week 1- Speed and Energy Week 2- Energy Transfer Week 3- Changes in Speed and Energy Week 4- Energy Conversion Week 5- Modeling Waves Week 6- Perception of Light Week 7- Information Transfer Unit Two: Life Science Week 8- Animal Structures and Their Functions Week 9- Plant Structures and Their Functions Week 10- The Senses Week 11- Responding to Stimuli Unit Three: Earth and Space Science Week 12- Earth's Changes over Time Week 13- Weathering and Erosion Week 14- Earth's Physical Features Week 15- Renewable and Nonrenewable Energy Week 16- Human Impact on Earth Unit Four: Engineering Week 17- Defining Design Problems Week 18- Design Constraints Week 19- Comparing Solutions Week 20- Improving Ideas and Designs This class uses the 4th Grade Daily Practice Workbook by Argo Prep as its primary textbook. The book is not required for the class but may be used to allow students to dive deeper into the topics. Parents should be aware, however, that while I like the Argo Prep Workbook, I believe Argo Prep skimped on paying a copy editor and there are some typos in the book.
학습 목표
Learners will gain confidence in core areas of science and build a foundation in several scientific disciplines. Learners will have a chance to discover and discuss what they learn and see real-world examples of the science we are learning about.

When we are discussing the form and function of plants and animals, we may reference evolution and Charles Darwin. We will not be discussing evolution at length. If you have any questions you may contact me directly. Outschool is a secular platform so any alternatives to evolution will need to be discussed outside of class amongst learners and their families.
Week Nineteen we will be building bird feeders that we design in week eighteen. Depending on your learner's design, parental assistance may be required. They may need help cutting plastic or punching holes in cardboard or plastic. Please be sure to have an adult nearby.

Week Three -Two tennis balls - an empty section of wall Week Four - a flashlight with no batteries in it - batteries for the flashlight Week Five - clay or play-doh - toothpicks Week Six - flashlight - mirror This will work best in a dark room. Does not need to be pitch but the darker the better. Week Seven - flashlight Week Eight - blank paper or drawing paper - drawing utensils Week Nine - a flower, leaf, or another plant (optional) Week Ten - Jelly Beans Week Eleven - patterned fabric or scrapbook paper in two different colors (the more different the better) - many different colors of construction paper - colored pencils -scissors Week Twelve - a small box (like a shoebox or similar) - enough pebbles to cover the bottom of the box - sand - potting soil - a small figurine This project may get messy. An outdoor location is best. Week Thirteen - something to draw with -something to draw on Week Fourteen - A sandbox or a large plastic tub (like a dishpan) filled with sand (or dirt) - water This project may get messy. An outdoor location is best. Week Fifteen -something to draw on -something to draw with Week Sixteen - drawing paper - drawing supplies Week Seventeen - something to draw on - something to draw with - an object in your house with a function (This can be a toy, piece of furniture, piece of clothing, appliance- anything the learner knows how to use) Week Eighteen - something to draw on - something to write on - a pencil with an eraser - Some recyclable items. We'll need a variety of shapes and sizes.
