Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this weekly, ongoing course, we will observe, discuss, & draw different animals each week based on their classification - mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as invertebrates. The content does not build, however it is a complete semester course. After the course cycle, it will repeat with different animals. We will discuss the animal kingdom, the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates, and each week, we will focus on one animal classification. We will observe real life examples of animals within that group, discuss fun facts, and then we will highlight an "animal of the week". We will observe the animal in detail & discuss fun facts, and then we will draw the animal together! After drawing together, we will engage in a discussion in which each learner will have the option to share their artwork with the group and talk about it. This concluding activity promotes positive discussion, strengthening communication as well as critical thinking skills. 2024 Schedule: Summer Session: Week of June 3: Mammals Week of June 10: Birds Week of June 17: Fish Week of June 24: Reptiles Week of July 1: Amphibians Week of July 8: Annelids Week of July 15: Insects Week of July 22: Arachnids Week of July 29: Crustaceans Week of August 5: Mollusca Week of August 12: Echinoderms Week of August 19: Cnidaria Week of August 26: Sponges Week of September 2: Make up week (I will go over all content missed.)
Learning Goals
This lesson provides several positive learning outcomes. By drawing one animal and learning about its classification, the learner is able to gain a deeper understanding of science and art in our world around us. Other learning outcomes include positive communication and critical thinking skills. Discussion during the presentation and activity promotes positive communication, as does sharing the artworks in the concluding discussion. Additionally, the learner will utilize critical thinking skills by applying, analyzing and synthesizing their prior knowledge and experiences into the concluding discussion as well as into the artwork they create.
