수업 소개
At the beginning of this class, the teacher will teach the student how to use a rubric to assess his/her writing piece. We will also look at some mini lessons on specific kinds of writings that we will be focusing on via YouTube videos to keep in mind specific things that we are working on. The more details that are written/drawn or written the more advanced the writing level is on the rubric. The teacher will explain that a number 1 is where we begin in writing and we will build on this to add details, number 2 has a few more details because it has some color, eyes, nose, mouth, etc. , a number 3 is even better because it has lots of color, more details, and some words that the child tried to sound out, a number 4 gets even better with so many details that it tells a story and there is a title to it or a sentence, and a number 5 is where the student draws a detailed picture about the theme and writes a story that goes with the theme. We will also talk about how good writers start their sentences with a capital letter, put spaces between the words, and end the sentence with a punctuation mark. At the beginning, the student will see on a slide show examples of pictures for each number that is on the rubric. Questions will be asked to get the student to brainstorm and tell what could be added to a picture to make it more like a story. Then we will work together to draw a picture and brainstorm ideas of details to add, a good title, and several sentences to make a paragraph. Support will be given to help with spelling of words, ideas for adjectives and adverbs to make it more descriptive, and/or whatever the student needs help with. For more advanced students, the focus will be more on the writing part, rather than the picture. Once the student is finished he/she can then share his/her work with the teacher. Positive feedback from the teacher will be given to encourage the student in this writing process. As always, ESL students are welcome. When signing up for this class, I would love for you to send me a list of things that your child likes so that I might can include these in our writings. Here is the theme for each week. This could be slightly changed, depending on the student's interest. Week of May 2-6: You have traveled into outer space. What do you see? Week of May 9-13: If dinosaurs still roamed the earth… Week of May 16-20: On a dark and stormy night… Week of May 23-27: You now have a super power. What is it and what will you do with it?
학습 목표
The student will improve on learning how to add details to pictures that he/she draws. The student will learn that it is important to start a sentence with a capital letter, to space between the words, and to punctuate the sentence at the end. Students will also learn that sentences are made up of different parts such as the subject, verb, adjectives, and adverbs. Students will learn that we can make our writings more creative and fun by adding adjectives and adverbs in our sentences.

수업 자료
Materials needed for this class include: a writing/journal notebook that has a place to draw at the top and a place to write at the bottom or a regular notebook would be great for those who want to focus more on the writing part. If your child does not have one of these, then a sheet of paper is fine also. Pencil, Eraser, Crayons, Markers, Color Pencils. (Pictures that are drawn with markers show up much more when sharing but your child may prefer to use crayons or colored pencils and that is fine.)

Hello! My name is Mrs. Kay and I have been enjoying teaching online with Outschool since the Fall of 2021!! I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. I have been a Kindergarten teacher for many years and the last couple of years teaching, I was also teaching ESL students online early in the mornings. I retired in 2021 from the public school system but wanted to continue to use my teaching skills. I was fortunate to find Out School and be able to continue teaching children in a less restrictive way. In the below video, I demonstrate how I would teach reading online to young children.
As far as my teaching philosophy, I believe that all children can learn but they learn in a variety of ways. I like to address each type of learner by using a variety of teaching methods. For example using tactile/hands on objects helps the kinesthetic learner and using lots of pictures to teach with helps the visual learner. Young children especially benefit from
using a variety of teaching methods. In my years of teaching, I have taught many children how to read but one of my greatest loves has been working with children in the early stages of the writing process. If you are interested in me helping your young learner with the early stages of writing, please check out my “Little Writers Workshop “ class where I teach young children how to use a picture that they draw to make a story.
A little bit about me:
I was raised a farm/country girl and enjoy being around nature. My home that my husband built is surrounded by lots of woods and wildlife. The hobbies that I enjoy include cooking, baking, and gardening. In the summer, I enjoy canning fresh vegetables from our garden and going on fun trips with my family. This year, I will be the Art teacher for the school that I recently retired at so I am looking forward to this new adventure. I also hope to see your child on Out School!
