Included in this series are themes including the death of loved ones, separation from family, use of sedatives, and occasional violent attack from the "bad guys." The main character, and occasionally her friends, are kidnapped, restrained, and injured. Their body guards eventually train the teenaged elves to fight in a more military style that includes using throwing stars and daggers. There are some teen "crushes" included in the story line and several moments of hand-holding. The language is quite mild, including references to various types of feces (mostly as a part of elvin medical treatments) and the name of an alicorn, "Glitter Butt."
