🔍 In this interactive 4-week course, high school students will develop critical reading and literary analysis skills while reading some of today’s most popular young adult (YA) novels. Students will begin with a Book Talk to explore a curated list of recent YA books across various genres. Throughout the course, students will: ✅ Improve their reading fluency and comprehension ✅ Learn how to annotate for meaning and depth ✅Make inferences using textual evidence ✅Analyze theme, character development, and author’s craft ✅Engage in academic discussion and creative reflection This class is designed to honor student choice, create a positive reading experience, and help learners connect personally with what they read. 📚 Book Choices (Students choose one to read): All books are high-interest, educator-recommended YA novels published in the last 10 years. Parents are encouraged to review book content to determine the best fit for their learner. ✨The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Mystery/Thriller) ✨Legendborn by Tracy Deonn (Fantasy/Arthurian Retelling) ✨Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds (Verse Novel, Realistic Fiction) ✨The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna (Fantasy/Feminist Fiction) ✨They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (Dystopian/Contemporary Fiction) ✨Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo (Verse Novel, Realistic Fiction) ✨Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley (Thriller/Indigenous Identity) Learners will choose their book during our first class meeting.

With over 15 years of experience in education—including the past nine years as a dedicated homeschool educator—I specialize in helping students explore complex ideas through critical thinking, multiple perspectives, and meaningful discussion. I believe that literature is a powerful lens through which students can examine the world, build empathy, and strengthen their analytical skills.
My teaching philosophy centers on creating inclusive, engaging spaces where every learner feels valued. I have extensive experience working with neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD, autism, and other learning differences, and I’m passionate about helping them recognize their unique thinking styles as strengths. I prioritize developing confidence, executive functioning strategies, and student voice in every class I teach.
In my literature-based courses and book clubs, I go beyond plot analysis to explore theme, symbolism, author’s craft, and cultural context. I love helping students connect literature to real-world issues and personal experiences. My teaching style is flexible, discussion-driven, and supportive of multiple learning styles and processing approaches.
I’ve led middle and high school English, History, Book Clubs, Literature through Film, Engineering, and Financial Literacy classes across homeschool groups and co-ops. I’ve also completed sensitivity and diversity training to ensure my classes are welcoming and respectful learning environments for all.
Whether we’re analyzing a powerful novel or building a student-led book discussion, my goal is always the same: to help learners think deeply, express their ideas clearly, and fall in love with learning.
