Writing by Genre is a dynamic, 12-week one-to-one course designed for gifted bilingual and ESL learners (B2+ and above) aged 10–14 who want to explore the art of fiction writing while building their English skills. This one-to-one class is designed to fit your schedule! Please message me to request a time that works best for your child. This class goes beyond formulaic approaches to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and authentic self-expression. Guided by a publisher writer/ YA series editor with an MA in Creative Writing, who is a CELTA-certified educator with over 14 years of teaching experience, students will dive into a variety of exciting genres, such as fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, and sci-fi, while honing essential writing skills. Each session is tailored to the learner’s pace, interests, and needs, providing the opportunity to develop stories that are uniquely their own. This course is perfect for students who love storytelling and wish to grow as writers, thinkers, and creators in English as their second language. "Writing by Genre" provides a highly interactive, personalised learning experience designed to support young writers in their creative journey. Students will learn to: Identify the difference between non-fiction and fiction writing. Write across multiple fiction genres, including fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, and sci-fi. Create compelling characters, immersive settings, and dynamic plots. Understand the writing process as a fluid cycle of brainstorming, drafting, revising, and refining. Explore advanced writing techniques like "show, don’t tell," subtext in dialogue, and world-building. Develop transferable skills in storytelling, critical thinking, and self-expression. What topics will you cover? Each week focuses on a specific aspect of storytelling, such as: The foundations of storytelling (fiction vs non-fiction vs creative non-fiction). Building complex characters and crafting believable dialogue. Designing settings that enhance the story’s tone and theme. Developing plots with strong emotional beats and unexpected twists. Exploring and writing in specific genres, like realistic fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi. Polishing stories through editing and reflection. How are classed structured? The course is sequentially scaffolded, with each week building upon the previous one, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the learner’s individual progress and interests. A typical class includes: Engage: Warm-up activity or discussion related to the week’s topic. Explore: Introduction of techniques and skills through examples and discussion. Create: Hands-on writing activity with personalised guidance. Reflect: Review the activity, receive feedback, and set goals for follow-up. Feedback will combine on-the-spot error correction as well as delayed feedback collated by the instructor. I use a constructivist, student-centred approach that encourages creativity and critical thinking. Lessons incorporate discussion, guided exercises, and personalised feedback. Activities are designed to balance structure and freedom, so students feel supported but not confined. Visual aids like slides and brainstorming maps are used for clarity, alongside practical demonstrations of writing techniques. Teaching style: My teaching style is supportive, interactive, and adaptive. I foster a safe, encouraging space where students feel free to take creative risks and develop their unique voices. I use a balance of positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to motivate and guide students toward growth. This is a highly interactive, one-to-one course. Each session is conversational, with opportunities for students to ask questions, share ideas, and receive immediate, targeted feedback on their writing. Between sessions, follow-up assignments are reviewed with detailed written feedback to support ongoing progress. This class is designed to inspire and empower young writers, helping them develop skills that go beyond the classroom. If you’re ready to nurture your child’s creativity and confidence, this course provides the tools and guidance to make it happen. My teaching philosophy, which I call Empowered Expression Pedagogy, is rooted in the belief that gifted bilingual and ESL learners thrive when their unique linguistic and cultural perspectives are celebrated as strengths. Drawing on over 14 years of experience, alongside insights from cognitive and constructivist educational research, I craft learning environments that balance creative exploration with structured skill-building. By nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and authentic self-expression, I guide students to transcend traditional boundaries and unlock their full potential as confident, original writers.
