Day #1:
What is a poem? Brainstorming for how to write one. Class creates a poem together (Acrostic). Individual writing time to write autobiographical, cinquain and color poems.

ACROSTIC:
In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word.
The word often is the subject of the poem.

An example is-
Incredible knowing
Night time wake up!
Something whispers, 
"Push through. Do this! Be brave!"
I listen and feel courage, hope.
Right now I'm
Encouraged

Write a poem about yourself using this form or another poetry form.

Line 5: Who feels__ about__1 emotion about 1 thing

COLOR:
A poem about your favorite color. Express your feelings about a single color with analogies or similes or list nouns which are (or remind you of) that color.
Another easy form is to use the 5 senses-looks like, sounds like, smells like, tastes like, feels like.

Color tastes like
Color feels like

An example is -
Black
Black is sleepy, safe
It's Netlfix, popcorn and couch cushions
Black tastes like tea and cookies
Black smells like spices.
Black feels like a fuzzy robe and sounds like a popping fire.

Black is an evening out to the opera and a fine restaurant meal.

Day #2:
What is poetry recitation? How can a reader engage with an audience when reading poetry? Practice. Students choose the favorite poem they have written and recites it to the class.

Hello! I've been teaching theatre for 26 years and I was also a children's performer for ten of those years. I own a theatre program and I put on a show after every 20 hours of instruction (almost 60 shows in six years!).  I teach children ages 3-20.  I've been teaching in some capacity since 1996: public, private, homeschool, online. 

I believe EVERYONE needs and wants to be creative and expressive. Sydney Clemens says "Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else" and my goal is to allow students a safe place to explore and shine and comfortably be themselves.
