What topics will you cover? Pre-War Diplomacy: The geopolitical dynamics of the 1930s, including the tensions between democracies, fascist states, and the Soviet Union. World War II Strategy: Military planning, foreign policy decision-making, and the consequences of these actions on the global stage. Historical Analysis: Comparing in-game events to real-world historical developments, such as the reoccupation of the Rhineland, the Spanish Civil War, and Italy’s annexation of Ethiopia. Collaboration and Leadership: Working in teams to lead a nation, strategize effectively, and achieve victory. How is your class structured? This multi-week class combines gameplay with historical analysis: Week of December 5th: Introduction to the rules and board setup. Learners explore the global situation in 1936, studying the tripolar world of democracies, fascist states, and communism. Week of December 12th: The first turn begins as learners make foreign policy decisions and move units. Historical context includes the first two months of 1936. Week of December 19th: The second turn covers Spring 1936. Learners strategize to build their countries’ militaries, reacting to events like Germany’s reoccupation of the Rhineland and Italy’s war in Ethiopia. Week of December 26th: The third turn addresses early summer 1936. Learners will need a Steam-account to log into the game, as the class will be using the Tabletop Simulator, available on Steam for about $10 US. Learners should log in using a desktop or laptop, with a mouse, to navigate the 3D boargame.
