Ready for a fright? In this class, learners will read sections of a book before class and then come to class ready to discuss them! We will use the framework of Reading Powers by Adrienne Gear to base our discussions on. Learners will enjoy discovering a range of new books and sharing their ideas with fellow horror lovers. All reading will need to be done outside of class. While all books will be of the horror genre, they will remain appropriate for learners. I am an elementary school teacher and horror lover excited to share her passion with fellow fright fans! We will begin with the book 'Night Books' by J.A. White. We will read this over several classes. We will then continue with 'Serefina and the Black Cloak,' and 'The House with a Clock in Its Walls.' We will then continue with books collaboratively chosen by learners based on their interests. - Week of July 4th- Night Books - Week of July 11th - Night Books - Week of July 18th - Night Books - Week of July 25th - Night Books - Week of August 1st - Night Books - Week of August 8th - Serefina and the Black Cloak - Week of August 15th - Serefina and the Black Cloak - Week of August 15th - Serefina and the Black Cloak - Week of August 22nd - Serefina and the Black Cloak - Week of August 29th - Serefina and the Black Cloak - Week of September 5th - The House with a Clock in its Walls - Week of September 12th - The House with a Clock in its Walls - Week of September 19th - The House with a Clock in Its Walls - Week of September 26th - The House with a Clock in Its Walls - Week of October 3rd - The House with a Clock in Its Walls

Students will grow in their understanding of reading comprehension strategies, particularly the reading powers (summarizing, connecting, questioning, predicting, visualizing, and inferring). Their reading skills will also improve with practice and with keeping up with the posted schedule before class.
