単語探偵：英語の単語はどこから来たのか？

In this fun, one-time class, learners will become word detectives and explore where English words come from!

We'll start by getting to know each other and sharing some of our favorite weird words. Then it's time for a history lesson: learners will find out what historical events had an effect on English and get a glimpse into why English is such a complicated language to learn.

Next, we'll talk about some specific words with interesting origins or surprising links. Find out how the word "clue" has its origins in Greek mythology, what "companions" have to do with bread and whether "orange" was first used to mean the color or the fruit.

After that I will show learners how knowing the etymology, or history, of a word can sometimes help you figure out the meaning or understand the spelling.

Finally, learners will have the opportunity to ask questions about words they are interested in. We'll use an etymology website (through screen sharing) to find out the history of learners' favorite words and to find out what our names mean (for those who want to participate).
