このクラスで学べること

英語レベル - B1
米国の学年 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate レベル向け
This lesson will cover a real, complete scientific experiment, as the teacher will guide the students through the process of extracting the DNA contents of a few strawberries. Students will be performing the experiment at home, alongside the teacher, with their own materials.

The class will begin with an introduction/discussion about cells and DNA. We will look at the concept of living beings and the function that DNA performs within them. Then, we will discuss in general terms how biologists manage to pull out the DNA from living things, and some of the many uses they have for it, once they obtain it. This will tie to several areas of biology that we could explore, such as medicine, paleontology, and even forensics!

The main component of the class, will be, of course, the experiment itself! We will be performing it, teacher and students, at the same time. If the student is for some reason unable to perform the experiment alongside the class, they will still be able to watch in detail as the teacher performs it.

学習到達目標

Students will step into the shoes of a real scientist, and learn about the molecule that helps all living things exist!
Students will learn about lab safety in a monitored environment

This class involves an actual science experiment, that the learners will be performing in real time alongside the teacher. All of the materials required are safe to handle, and commonly found in a home setting. Nevertheless, it is important that all students are able to follow basic safety instructions from the teacher (e.g., avoiding ingestion, spills, or contact with eyes)
受講に必要なもの
Since this will be a guided experiment, all students will be required to keep their video on for the duration of the class, so they can be properly monitored.

The materials required for the DNA-extraction experiment are:

-About half a cup of rubbing alcohol (also called isopropyl alcohol) – easy to find in any pharmacy or supermarket! a 90% concentration is preferred, but 70% will work too!
-Two or three strawberries 🍓(fresh or frozen) - cut off the green leaves beforehand!
-A resealable plastic bag (e.g. a Ziploc bag) - large size! (quart-size should work!)
-Liquid dish soap (we'll need about two teaspoons)
-Salt 🧂(about one teaspoon)
-Water (about half a cup)
-One paper coffee filter
-Two plastic cups (disposable, preferably transparent)
-A coffee stirrer or toothpick

**IMPORTANT NOTE: The rubbing alcohol will need to be kept in the fridge overnight before the experiment for best results!
