Students will be excited after this class to share all they learned and their knowledge of the life and teachings of our historical figure. Learning is sharing. My goal is for all my students to take one thing away from class that ignites them. It is very special for them to share what they learn with others.

This class is for all students! Those who know nothing to those who know a lot about our featured person or topic. I look forward to introducing the history of George Washington Carver to your child! He taught our country about agriculture and farming. When did he live? Where did he live? Was is it hard or easy for him to be a scientist? He developed over 300 uses for peanuts BUT did not invent peanut butter. We will bust that myth in our class and learn who did.

Week 1 - Early Years
Week 2 - Adult Years
Week 4 - Topic Expansion/Extension
Week 3 - Later Years/Legacy

I will also post a question about our historical figure that will kick start our weekly class. Discussion questions will be posted one day prior to the class. Also, I will be available throughout the week to answer any questions via the classroom page.

Each week, students will be given vocabulary challenges to dig more into the words. What is/are the origin, pronunciation, definition, prefixes, suffixes, context, synonyms, and antonyms.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each animal/species? Where else might we encounter similar words? Students will make predictions based on advantages and disadvantages of the battling animals to pick the winner.

Students will look for clues in the graphics and explore those "bubbles" of text. Then they will digest the battle and discuss the outcome. Was it a good ending? Why? How would you change it? What vocabulary could we add to the battle?

Students that read non-fiction books tend to strengthen their background knowledge and experience. This knowledge is extremely helpful in informational writing, vocabulary development and understanding. Students will organize the words on those pages into graphic organizers such as venn diagrams, tri-folds, or lists. We may use story maps and mountains, timelines, and KWL Chart. KWL (What I Know, What I What to Know, What I Learned) charts.

Optional: There will be extended learning using embedded YouTube videos that students can watch to see the animals in their habitats.

Requested areas of learning with specific topics are always welcomed. If a student needs to work on a particular area of grammar, parts of speech, or spelling then we can include that in. I love getting specific requests from parents because it benefits the entire class.

Optional: Students can upload or record themselves reading the battle.

I will upload a snack idea, art idea, and/or craft idea each week for expanded learning opportunities.

I use a “show-n-tell” and/or "snack-n-tell" each week for students to upload a video, picture, or discuss in the classroom an item and/or snack. They can tell the class about their item and why they picked it. Objects/Food are great icebreakers and easier to talk about in a group setting. I will participate in this as well to bring rapport with the students.

In addition to the live class, I will give out a few peanut butter and sweet potato dessert recipes in class for students to make if they enjoy cooking/baking. Even though Carver did not invent peanut butter, we still are thankful for his contributions to farming.

Using live video meetings, classroom discussion questions, classroom activities, and "snack-n-tell", we will travel back in time to the world of George Washington Carver. Learning and sharing together will build strong connections within our study group. Classroom participation is up to the student. They may want to watch and absorb all the information. All learners will find a warm, supportive learning environment.

I love learning about people and history!! I learn along with the children with the same enthusiasm they have as we travel in time to meet important historical figures. With an ESL background, I find non-fiction reading improve students' overall skills. These classes add a fun element to reading while enhancing their English skills and building a strong knowledge background to strengthen their vocabulary and testing skills. As part of my degree, I took many history classes as they tie in well with ELA. I continue to learn myself and stay current by taking history, religious education, and literature classes. ESL teaching has taught me to look at classroom materials in a unique way. I create my own slides and adapt them as needed according to my students. I love to see students' confidence grow as they learn. I am very patient and encouraging with all my students.

It is a joy to teach, read and journey with my students. I read at a very early age and remember the joy of a new book or an escape in time. I read and listen to multiple books and participate in book clubs myself. I share book titles and suggestions with my friends. My bookshelves stay full and I offer a lending library to encourage reading among youth and adults. I hope to ignite this lifelong hobby to your child.
