In this interactive book study, learners will read, discuss and complete activities to deepen their comprehension of the Newberry Award-winning novel When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller!
This uplifting story brings Korean folklore to life as a girl goes on a quest to unlock the power of stories and save her grandmother. Lily and her family move in with her sick grandmother, and a magical tiger straight out of her halmoni's Korean folktales arrives, prompting Lily to unravel a secret family history. Long, long ago, Halmoni stole something from the tigers. Now they want it back! One of the tigers approaches Lily with a deal--return what her grandmother stole in exchange for Halmoni's health--Lily is tempted to agree. However, deals with tigers are never what they seem! With the help of her new friend Ricky, Lily must find her voice...and the courage to face a tiger.
This book study enhances students' development of critical thinking skills. In each meeting, students will engage in discussions about the chapters assigned for that session. This involves an examination of various literary elements such as the plot, characters, setting, point of view, and vocabulary. This approach is designed to enhance their understanding of the book and development of critical thinking skills. Tae Keller weaves Korean folktales and storytelling throughout the fascinating novel.
The teacher provides optional culminating activities in the classroom. These activities are designed to bring together and reinforce the learning that has taken place. They are optional, so your learner can choose to participate if they feel comfortable and ready. This approach allows for flexibility and caters to different learning styles and paces. As a licensed teacher specializing in Reading, I have had the opportunity to support and engage students with diverse learning needs. My experience has enabled me to develop a strong understanding of different instructional strategies to ensure that all students have the skills necessary for academic success. I am passionate about creating a positive classroom environment that is both supportive and engaging, where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and participating in discussions. With my expertise in Reading instruction, I strive to help each student develop a lifelong love for reading while achieving academic goals.
My passion is literature. I believe stories make concepts more palpable to children. Stories can teach readers valuable lessons, make them laugh, and see things from a different perspective, or take them somewhere new!
When I have time, I like to travel, experience different cultures, and learn the history of people and places. I am also an animal lover! I have two dogs, have worked with animal rescues, and fostered cats and dogs for years.
If you are interested in a class and don't see a time that meets your needs, please send me with your time request. I look forward to meeting your learner in class!
