このクラスで学べること
No prior knowledge required! In this lively discussion-based class we will analyze the Supreme Court case "In re Gault," and look at the 14th amendment and how it applies to them as a youth. What treatment of youth is acceptable under the U.S. Constitution? How is it different than adults? We will read through the aspects of the case through a case study, and stop for discussion along the way. We will look at a basic history of how the judicial system has handled youth. I will direct the discussion and reading while asking for student volunteers, and encourage them to engage with the reading and each other. Time permitting, we will begin critically thinking about the issue and case through questions requiring students to apply their gained knowledge about due process. I will leave students with an optional follow-up writing assignment.
